Pay back time

Brathwaite convicted of stealing a bottle of alcohol

A 62-year-old man, who stole a bottle of alcohol from Popular Discount Supermarket, must pay a fine in two months time if he wants to avoid spending time in jail.

Ronald Michael Brathwaite, of King William Street, St Michael, stole the $16.59 item around 3:55 p.m. yesterday from the supermarket’s Spry Street branch.

Brathwaite, who is well known to the law courts, was spotted by a security officer putting the bottle in his pocket after removing it from the display shelf.

“I begging you Ma’am please for a little break. I can’t do no time in jail. Please for a fine or something,” Brathwaite pleaded with Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today.

Acknowledging that Brathwaite had been out of the system for a long time since his last conviction in 2008, the magistrate imposed a $600 fine, which he must pay within the next two months.

If he breaches that order he will have to spend 12 months at HMP Dodds.

Brathwaite must return to court on April 6 to show proof of payment.

A restitution order was also granted for the stolen item to be returned.

This is a little harsh on the brother!

There was a fella who stole millions of dollars from the government and he is still walking around free looking like if he don’t have a care in the world.

If he is so desperate that he stole an item for the value of $16.59. What on Earth would make the Magistrate think that he can afford to pay a fine of $600?
And to consider incarcerating him for 12 months is ludicrous!!!!!!
How many Thousands of dollars will it cost the tax payer to keep him in prison compared to the initial cost of the stolen item valued at just $16.59?
The Magistrate needs to revalue her approach to sentencing and realise that in this case the punishment does not fit the crime. But form what i can gather, when it comes to Magistrates, these types of sentences are the norm.
