Ready for the world

Jus Jay looking to follow in Puffy’s footsteps

Last year all eyes were on DJ Puffy, but with the defending Red Bull Freestyle World DJ Champion opting not to compete this year, Barbados is placing all of its hopes in Jus Jay, who is eager to make his country proud and looking to bring home a second title.

“I will be contending to try to defend the championship, to bring it back home to Barbados,” a confident Jus Jay told Bajan Vibes on the sidelines of ‘Unlabelled’ at Copacabana Beach Bar on Sunday, adding that he was thrilled not only to be representing his home country, but the entire Caribbean.

The popular local deejay has been selected for the Americas zone as a wild card in the competition, in which there are 25 international competitors.

“Preparations have been insane I have literally cancelled all my bookings. I did two events for the whole of January because I have been indoors practising 24/7. It’s been a real stressful procedure, but I’m hoping that when I actually get on that stage and people see what I’ve got to offer that they will appreciate the time and effort that has been put into the preparation for this,” he said.

With the added pressure of following in the defending champion DJ Puffy’s footsteps, Jus Jay said he was prepared to put his all into his performance and to simply leave everything on stage.

“I’m representing my country, so I can’t go there and give it half. I have to give it a 100 per cent in general,” he told Bajan Vibes.

However, he acknowledged that “I don’t do well with competition. It makes me really antsy, but generally when I get on stage the nervousness tends to disappear,” he said.

As for what his fans can look forward to on the big night, Jus Jay, without giving too much away, said he had a few tricks up his sleeve.

“What influenced it was the fact that the age of technology has made deejaying kind of easy to get into, get a laptop get music and boom, boom, boom, so every kind of [person] is a DJ now. So we are going back to the basics, to vinyl and the tricks,” he said.

The finals of the Red Bull Freestyle World DJ Championship come off in Poland early next month.
