Labourer begs for a break

A 21-year-old labourer, who pleaded guilty to a drug charge, must be on his best behaviour for the next two years.

Shaquille Daunte Stoute, of Lightfoot Lane, Baxters Road, St Michael, admitted to having 4.1 grammes of cannabis in his possession while on Browne’s Beach on December 3.

However, he told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that he had found “the weed” before just before he was stopped and searched by two officers.

“I told them it is mine [but] I want to know if I can get a chance?” Stoute asked, as he appealed for leniency, saying he did not want to lose his job because “things getting hard”.

The accused man was therefore placed on a bond. If he breaches it, he will have to pay the court a $1,500 forthwith fine or spend eight months in jail.
