Kick ‘Dem’ out

A number of ministers in the Freundel Stuart Cabinet, including Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler, should be fired over the long running sewage mess on the south coast, a former Minister of the Environment has said.

Lawyer and sustainability consultant Elizabeth Liz Thompson told Barbados TODAY that in addition to Sinckler, Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe, Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy, Minister of Water Resources Management Dr David Estwick and Minister of Health John Boyce should also be sacked immediately because of their failure to effectively manage a number of recurring environmental issues.

Former Minister of the Environment Elizabeth Liz Thompson (right) has said that a number of ministers in the Freundel Stuart Cabinet, including Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler (left), should be fired over the long running sewage mess on the south coast.

Chief among these is the ongoing sewage problem, which she said had become “a national disgrace and environmental disaster at every level”, and over which tourists who experienced the latest flare up have cried foul.

Speaking to Barbados TODAY on the fringes of the 6th annual sustainability conference in St Eustatius, Thompson, who also served as Minister of Health in an Owen Arthur-led Barbados Labour Party Cabinet before she was sacked under different circumstances, said the sewage problem was symptomatic of the way the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) manages the country’s affairs.

“The Ministers of Health, Tourism, Water Resources and Environment – and I understand that part of the problem comes from cutting the budget and starving the sewerage project of funds to do maintenance and buy maintenance parts – so the Minister of Finance, they should all resign or be fired immediately based on the fact that what is happening on the south coast is a health hazard, it is an engineering and environmental disaster, it is a national disgrace,” a passionate Thompson said after delivering the keynote address at this morning’s opening of the conference in the small Dutch Caribbean island of under 4,000 people.

“This is unprecedented in our history to have raw sewage, toilet paper and sewage water just floating in the [Hastings area] around restaurants and around the streets where people live. And with Christmas coming up and the tourist season, it is a disaster, but it is typical of how the Democratic Labour Party have run the country.”

Residents, businesses and tourists had to contend again this week with raw sewage and the accompanying stench in the Hastings, Christ Church area, a critical section of the island’s tourism belt.

However, Boyce, Estwick and Sealy yesterday sought to quell any concerns residents and visitors may have, saying the situation was being actively addressed.

Boyce, the Member of Parliament for the area, added that “all of us are putting our heads together along with the team from the Barbados Water Authority [BWA] to make sure that we resolve the matter”.

A year ago Boyce and Sealy had invited the media to watch them dive right into the waters at Worthings Beach, in a move designed to reassure Barbadians and tourists alike that at no time was the beach threatened by sewage.

This came several weeks after residents and business owners on the south coast had complained about raw sewage on the roads and sidewalks, and later, the beach.

With the issue continuing to flare up despite previous assurances by the BWA that it was being resolved, Thompson said the time had come for the DLP to be kicked out of office over this matter.

“They have downgraded Barbados and it is part of the reason they should be made to go because the situation under them is just getting progressively worse, and either they are lying about it because they said there was no sewage problem, or they do not have the capacity to address the challenges that the country has been having,” said Thompson, who was appointed in 2010 as assistant secretary general of the United Nations and one of two executive coordinators of Rio+20 conference.

It was only yesterday that Estwick, whose ministry is charged with coming up with a workable solution to the sewage problem, admitted that the matter was proving too challenging for Manager of Waste Water Department Patricia Inniss and her technical staff at the BWA to resolve on their own, and that help might have to be sought from abroad.

He also outlined several options that were being examined, as he sympathized with those affected.

“I am going to do everything that I can to rectify the problem and move aggressively to ask the Cabinet to let us get on with the construction of a new facility,” he said, as he explained that the sewage plant for the area was an old on that had deteriorated somewhat.

Yea, but Liz let’s be reasonable: when you fire them where do you find replacements? They would have to co-op members of the Barbados Labour Party. The whole lot is in the cabinet. It’s the largest, least productive and most wasteful cabinet in the history of the country.

The Barbados Labour Party seem to have appointed you as their PR Manager.

What else have they offered to you.

We know that the NUPW leader has been offered a Diplomatic post overseas.

You really sign well for your supper.

What is in store for you????

That south sewerage mess is a national disgrace, the consequences of which are dire for our tourism product. Don’t just stand there and stare or the BLP will inherit the problem.

Liz they should have kicked you out before Owen fired you when he were involved in constructing a shower for over $300,000.00

    • hcalndre December 7, 2017 at 6:29 am

@Saga Boy; Speak of the issue that is plaguing the south coast where tourists, food places and hotels are located and persons have to contend with raw sewage floating in the streets and the area stinks. What the firing of Liz has to do with this problem, although you are a yard fowl and an apologist for the DLP use your common sense for once if any is left.

Yes kick them out. Grenville up the ting. The political and some of the public servants mafioso has Barbados the way it is.

    • roger headley December 7, 2017 at 8:36 am

I was hungry for a third party. When the idea was first touted I was jumping for joy – but Grenville, Wendell, Lynette and the other guy is so charismatic that the name just ‘ain’t coming’ to me right now – nah, all clowns.

    • Adrian December 7, 2017 at 10:09 am

Maybe Greenville can step in and help us out here. I am sure that he can determine if it’s just a maintenance issue or it’s a capacity problem.

After 2 years of sewage all over the road Estwick finally admits that we may have a serious problem. How can it possibly take 2 years to come to that conclusion? All of those ministers need to leave. In fact the buck stops at Fumbles who appears to be sleeping at the moment.

  16. jrsmith December 7, 2017 at 12:06 pm

After 2 terms in government , this lot cannot even put together a things to do list , they also haven’t even tick one box of anything they have done,, Oh yes , they have raise taxes………..
It seems none of the sewage system ever worked properly , wonder who sign them off………………….

  17. milli watt December 7, 2017 at 1:17 pm

If I recall thompson and that BLP crowd had the responsibility for that plant, it as usual had problems with money and idustrial action. I remember two former senior union officials CRYING over it a night and you turn up like a WHITE KNIGHT………..WDR I hearing. while I would like to see the back a dis crowd I don’t look forward to seeing your group either.

    Liz you to sweet

  19. archy perch December 7, 2017 at 3:11 pm

@milli watt. I acknowledge your contribution to this chat. It is fair and honest and it is a fact. The crooked double talking Barbados Labour Party – when money was plentiful- did NOT fix the system during their terms. Liz was too busy geting contracts for her husband’s construction firm. I am amazed that these bunch of rascals could even open their mouths as if they were washed in Jesus blood. They money is not there for this government to fix everything instantly as they are being told to do. For those people like jrsmith who lives in England, alot of what you hear on Brasstacks and read on social media is fake news and propaganda forwarded by the BLP yardfowls, and they are many. Each with cups in hand waiting for their big big payday from the treasury. That crooked party is good at peddling bovine scatology and international style PR which the ruling DLP lacked over the years. That bunch – many of whom are back for a second pick at the cherry – have no shame. All I have to tell Liz is I would like the tape of she and her female friends fighting in that house down St. James that night remember. An LBGT ting. Dah Goat was one of them and the other………de faker…LOL

Kick them out, but it should be possible to charge them with reckless mismanagement Again why should they be awarded for failure. They should be separated from their gold-plated pensions

  21. Carson C Cadogan December 7, 2017 at 7:01 pm

Is this Elizabeth “”GOLDEN BATHS”” Thompson SPEAKING??

If her administration had spent the $400,000.00 she spent on the GOLDEN BATHS on the South Coast Sewage project we would not be having these problems today.

  22. Lorenzo December 8, 2017 at 6:43 pm

Saga Boy ,Archy Perch and CCC are you bajans first or DLP yardfowls. This situation on the South Coast is embarrassing causing locals and Tourists sickness and strife and you all on here talking about when Liz Thompson was fired and Greenland and all kind of nonsense. How does that alleviate the suffering on the South Coast?I guess none of you have relatives in the area, but put yourself in their position how would you feel? All three of you aredispicable human beings putting party before people,s health. My advice get the Government to get cracking with some sort of solution and not a lot of long talk. Those people deserve it.
