Bradshaw demands to know why Lashley was honoured

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart got some lashes in the House of Assembly tonight for giving to one of his ministers this country’s third highest award.

St Michael South East Member of Parliament Santia Bradshaw called out Stuart, demanding that he explain why he awarded the Gold Crown of Merit to Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth for his planning and execution of the regional cultural extravaganza CARIFESTA, which was staged in Barbados in August.

During debate tonight on the Cultural Industries Development Validation Bill 2017, Bradshaw told the House: “I have been at pains to congratulate the Minister because I know that he means well . . . at the same time, I am at pains to understand how the Honourable Prime Minister could bestow such an honour on a Minister for doing what is the Minister’s job.

“Members on the other side would do well to realize that the Prime Minister has basically declared his hand. He has set the cat amongst the pigeons on this one, because there is no other jurisdiction in the world where a minister of government would find himself vested with an honour for doing what he is paid by law to do . . .  and this has been expressed to me by cultural practitioners.”

The St Michael South East representative and leader of Opposition Business in the House of Assembly added: “I am at pains to understand precisely what it is that the Minister has been awarded for because you have ministers that have been long-serving like . . . the Member for St Lucy, the longest serving member in this Chamber and he has not gotten an award.”

Bradshaw also pointed to other high-ranking members of the Government benches like the Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy who was not awarded for his work in that important sector.

“I hope that the Prime Minister would speak to it or even the Minister himself,”  Bradshaw said, challenging Government representatives on the matter.

However, neither Lashley nor the Prime Minster took Bradshaw’s bait.

In his response to some questions raised by the Opposition member, Lashley refused to justify his Gold Crown of Merit which he got during the 2017 Independence Honours.

However, Bradshaw insisted that “there are people who are representing this country far and wide and who have never been acknowledged in relation to a cultural ambassadorship.

“At the same time, it is important that we do not send the wrong message,” she added.

The Opposition spokeswoman was also critical of Government’s failure to publish the proclaimed Cultural Industries Act in the Official Gazette which meant the legal process was incomplete and that Government had to return to House to validate the actions of the Minister, the board of directors and the Cultural Industries Development Authority over the past three years.

Ah girl, if nothing else he may be a General at dividing and ruling. He may not be PM material but he is an excellent ‘chess player’. You and Mia and all the others better take Owen seriously when he warns that Froons will trick you all and the electorate again.

I am from the off road tours and I want to thank this Government for keeping the road in this condition, with all of these potholes.Usually the tours would take place through cart roads for that rough terrain experience but now we do the tours in all the parishes on the main roads and these roads give the same experience as the cart roads.THANKYOU DLP.

When was the last time a cultural practitioner was honoured by either BLP or DLP. Without cultural practitioners there would be no Carifesta, no NIFCA, no Carifesta and no Cultural Industries.
As usual politicians honour themselves and there friends, hence the names on roundabouts and buildings.
    Shame on you all!

Totally agree. There is no way that the Minister whose job it is to be in charge of the running of Carifesta should be getting a national award for doing so. That is what he is paid to do and the only thing that he should be getting is his monthly salary and a thank you.
I also hear the Minister speak of how great the festival was. Maybe I was at another Carifesta!! It was good and I thoroughly enjoyed it but there were so many areas that could have been better and if you were to ask many of the visiting performers, they would tell it like it is.
We love the idea of Carifesta but the running of the festival really left much to be desired.

I want to know how much money her personal entertainment company Pyramid has gotten and continues to suck from the financial nipples. I heard a figure a while ago of $450,000. Come clean Santia, bring transparency to the fore.

What does that have to do with what she asked? She has a business. So what? its her business. How can a Prime Minister award a Minister of Government for doing what he is suppose and is paid to do? Stupse. Deal with the issues.
