Hunte steals chocolates valued at $5.50

A 58-year-old man, who was released from prison four days ago, was today sentenced to 12 more months in Dodds.

Well known thief Anthony St Clair Hunte, of Headley’s Land, Bank Hall, St Michael, pleaded guilty to stealing two chocolates worth $5.50 from Dollarwise Incorporated on December 2.

He entered the Swan Street store around 2 p.m. on the day in question and was observed by a security officer putting the confectionery in his pockets.

Hunte reportedly told the guard he was hungry; hence his reason for taking the items.

However, when he appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today he explained that he had a drug problem and requested drug rehabilitation.

Before sentencing him to prison, the magistrate noted that Hunte had amassed quite a history of theft.

Society makes it very tough for convicted felons to reintegrate in to society. At least this way, he’s got 3 square meals and a roof over his head.

You have a point here. I am of the view that some of these guys deliberately carry out these small acts to get back in “safe haven”, upon findng out that life outside bars is not so rosy and xmas time in Dodds is a breeze.

Moore Petty crime exposing a human being just for stealing £5.50 box of chocolates don’t let nobody else see this all over the world because nobody puts music on Media when newspaper for this rubbish the government needs to start paying people minimum wage and when I say minimum at least ten to $15 per hour and stop feeling people £2 an hour that they’re doing this the Asia your salary is so below the standard of living that’s why everybody song credit and people are broke

    • Gillian Skeete
Gillian Skeete December 5, 2017 at 6:41 am

It’s 5.50 barbados dollars not £s so a very small amount in dollars sad plus was two bars of chocolate not a box very sad country could care less about any minimum wage to match cost of living here

This kind of dumb rationalization of spends has been going or for years. I remember a guy from St. Vincent came to BIM illegally. He attempted to leave and go back through the airport. The Bajan authority arrested him, put him in jail and then paid to deport him to the same place they stopped him from going a year earlier….. pure morons.

I need to go visit Dodds one of these days , perhaps( a bucket list item) and see that wonder , that place has to be humongous- Just so! they send you up there for the slightest reason , no call in; (RSVP) to see if they have any available accommodation to place you …what is the apparent capacity of the monstrosity?, any idea of the square footage?, well I know it is under 166 square miles ? ……lol

    • Ashley Griffith

To be honest Dodds really isnt that bad it is just guards securing 24/7 and maintaining order. That’s it. This guy probably has no fixed place of abode and getting 3 free square meals what better way to live? He wanted to go back.

Truth be told ; we imported and employed a legal eagle that won’t fly. After all the hullabaloo. We still have about 7000 cases in back log. Won’t it be easy to establish a small claims court like “judge Judy” and get these type of cases quickly through the system at minimal costs ? social services for many who need not go and live free. …People are using this deadlock to frustrate others in gaining justice- “owing money and saying ” ……put me in court”..knowing that it won’t see the light of day for the next 7 years or more, ….like it’s a long term loan. this case is simply ridiculous, if I was the judge I would do this in chambers and bar the press.

next time one of my children get the chance to tour the prison i asking for permission to attend, i convinced is something up that side working cause people doing wrong things, staying for a while, coming out and quick so getting back into trouble so they could go back. Well if Dodds is the place for Christmas, good luck to all who will be checking themselves in, i think i will eat a little ham and watch my children enjoy their gifts, cause people understand when i tell you is nothing better than freedom.

What is really wrong with these magistrates though, and don’t tell me about the law. Chocolates at $5.50 and you sentence this man to more than 12 months. Don’t these magistrates walk around, don’t they shop, or they are just chaufferured around in cars Barbadians will probably never be able to own, and them the magistrates if not for their jobs would not have a Mercedes. Do you not know how life is outside your bullet proof glass, were you always affluent, and it also amazes me and I take special note of the judges that do that and then allow rapist, pedophiles, and bad boys on the street, Bajans wake up. If this magistrate or any of them was my buddy I really would have to ask wtf though, seriously ,
