Sewage system to be upgraded

Major upgrades are on the cards for Barbados’ sewage system.

Minister of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management,   Dr David Estwick, made the announcement on Friday as he addressed the official launch of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Renewable Energy Project.  It was held at the BWA’s headquarters at the Pine Commercial Estate, St Michael.

Noting the sewage issues which surfaced recently, Dr Estwick highlighted the need to modernise the system.

“I am moving aggressively to rebuild our sewage systems. They’re all old, archaic and failing. This is the reality…and sometimes you can imagine the level of development that would’ve happened on the south coast since the 1990s, when that South Coast Sewage Plant was built. So, we’re now facing infrastructure issues and future capacity issues,” he said.

It is against this background that Dr Estwick also revealed plans to recycle waste water, as he pointed out this is a critical reason why the BWA’s Waste Water Division was created.

“One of the things I am going to thrust going forward is to modernise our waste water and waste systems development, and this is the reason why we moved to set up a Waste Water Division, which is the way you have to deal with this… Separate waste water from potable water,” Dr Estwick stressed.

The Minister outlined how recycling waste water could help to boost the water supply, pointing out that Barbados is a water scarce country and could no longer depend on rainfall to replenish the aquifers.

“The critical element of that is this, we have to stop moving to treat water and sending it out in the ocean for the fish.  We’re moving to treat our sewage and our effluence to a tertiary standard, and then introduce aquifer recharge,”       Dr Estwick explained.

“No longer will we be sending three million gallons of water into the ocean that can be brought back to land to supplement the water in our aquifers,” he stated.

According to Dr Estwick, the time has come for “critical and urgent” strategies to be implemented to enhance the water and sewage infrastructure, as well as the operations of the BWA.

I`m skeptical of drinking the water as it is now, after it is boiled and settled in your kettle especially a glass kettle, I don`t think that it should come into your home in that gray looking with and all that limestone, the meters have done nothing to improve the standard of the water, is this recycled water be coming into your homes or for irrigation purpose, then you will have the problem in your home instead across the road.

Hire a plumber to install an,” Inline water filter” on your pipe before it enters the house and that should improve the water quality.

The problem with south coast sewage has been going on for over 2 years now. Yet only now the minister announces this grand plan when he has only a couple of months left in office. I guess this is all part of the silly season. This sort of thing will require months of studies and lots of money neither one of which this government has.

When he can’t did get his way he goes under a rock, and for months nobody don’t hear anything from him unless it is something to do with money and the barbados water authority. So andy g if you think that thee big pretty building in thee pine is something think again cause that is a wast of money just like the acres of ribbon tamarind trees in the bell.

Not only is the timing of this press statement a blatant piece of electioneering, he has failed to mention the cherry on the turd: the costs of the upgrades will get passed on to the taxpayer because the already inflated taxes and water costs we pay have been siphoned off into the cess pit of ministerial pockets……

This is no election gimmick : I was in Independence Square 2013 and that is what he said then. He is doing a great job at replacing the old mains but this is costly and time consuming.I am sure if the money was available he would have done it a long time ago,
and remember we are blessed with heavy rainfall for the past 3 years and this will slow progress as well as cause more Roads and water mains to be damages ; Just remember the Problems and inconvenience when Project was first done , given the size of the roads and the spider web like layout with alleys .Laynes Cul De Sac… Staff I do not Envy him for his job .

Wouldn’t it be better to do these things before a crisis develops. It’s called planning ahead. Leaders must always have a vision for the future. They do not have the luxury, like other citizens of living in the moment.

    Dear Minister.
Allow me to draw your attention to your mistake.
    You noticed, sewage issues surfaced.
Sir, it was LARGE TURDS which surfaced, albeit prettily wrapped seasonally. After all it is nearly Christmas.

Forgive my misgivings but you in charge of recycling and recharging our aquifers, does not instill in me the vaguest confidence to partake in the resulting or maybe
    revolting, brew.
Now bull sh*t i feel confident you have mastered, but reconstituted PI*S, sorry you done have my vote.
So please make a note of the difference of problems and Large TURDS

So here it is ! You Mighty craftsmen of your faite! You are all Barbadian. You are all surposed to be educated, so what’s your recomendations? Do you think that a political party changes things or the integrity and innovation of the masses ? Under a party change recomendations for change agreements must be looked at and if they are mandated then it’s guarenteed by public law to be initiated unless repealed! Party changes require public cost for publishing and printing documentation and letter heading, decor and furniture updates and the list goes on.
