Depeiza admits to being in the wrong place at the wrong time

A 30-year-old man must pay $1,500 to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court within the next three months if he wants to avoid spending 12 months in prison.

Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant handed down the sentence to Mario Andre Davidson Depeiza, of Trents, St James, who pleaded guilty to having $45 worth of illegal drugs in his possession yesterday.

He was apprehended after police were informed that a man was in the Pirates Cove area, along Browne’s Beach, selling drugs.

He was stopped and nine Ziploc bags containing a vegetable substance, suspected to be cannabis, were found.

“I ain’t selling, give me a break,” he reportedly told police at the time.

However, in the docks today Depeiza, who has two prior convictions, told Cuffy-Sargeant: “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

He urged the magistrate to impose a fine on him, but said he would need some time to settle the bill, which must be paid by the time he returns to court on February 8.
