Increased number of burglaries alarming, says AG

The number of burglaries has sparked within the past year, Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite has said.

Brathwaite, who is also the Minister of Home Affairs, was speaking to the media at the Crime Awareness Month church service held at New Dimensions Ministries, when he disclosed that the increased number of burglaries was alarming.

“It continues to escalate year on year, so we have to examine why people are breaking into people’s houses, what are they doing with the proceeds, they are obviously selling them. They can’t be using all the televisions and stereo systems that they are stealing . . .  we have to work out who they are selling them to … we have to work out why they are acquiring the property,” the Attorney General said.

Acknowledging that poverty-related crime was also on the rise, Brathwaite theorised that the robberies could be drug-related.

“I suspect in many instances that it is drug related, not that the guys are unemployed and decide this is how I will make a living,” he said while adding that his ministry and the police were making great strides to reduce the demand for illegal drugs.

Following on the theme for Crime Awareness Month, Reducing Crime and Violence in Communities, Director of the Criminal Justice Research Unit, Cheryl Willoughby said that the department will be going into at-risk communities to determine the cause of crime and violence and develop possible programmes to stem it.

“The aim is to identify those risk factors specific to every community we are going in . . . I believe the time has come now where Barbados can no longer depend on anecdotal thought or information to pilot programmes in communities that we deem to need them most,” she added.

Poverty breeds crimes…. the people are living in poverty, what do you expect ? No-one cares, we are not a community that looks after each other…

I thought this model of Governing was built on the UK Model…..well they updated their years ago. Continuing with this system is the reason why things are spirralling out of control, the Governning bodies only care about money and have not balanced the scales. Over-taxation is causing more and more social ills and the people at the top, only demand more and more taxes and are CAUSING ALL THESE SOCIAL ILLS. THE LOVE OF MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALLLLLL EVIL !!

When ROME burned Nero played his fiddle, they also said he was an ineffectual leader…..

I could liken that to The Barbados Government. By the way, Barbados cannot even be independent when it belongs to the Commonwealth and the Queen is the Head of the Commonwealth, all these MPs and people at the top, just lie. And they do it to test whether the masses STILL believe everything they say. Most do !! Thats why Barbados will suffer until people come to the realisation, THEY HAVE BEEN HAD BIG TIME HERE IN BARBADOS. The rest of the world dont live as expensively as you.

Food and clothes in both the USA and the UK are cheap, most electrical items have a 1 year warranty and are relatively the best models of anything. Cars are even much cheaper than here. The most expensive place in the Caribbean and mostly the world, is right here in Barbados, because the people DO NOT STAND UP and complain about their rights.

Its hard for them to do that, because you are descendents of slaves who NEVER stood up for themselves. Your ancesters are from the Transatlantic Slave Trade. You are African descendents.

The truth has been revealed !!

For many years this mislead in education was raised by many layman peoples and still no avail. The lies continues. To change any of these colonial systems will result in mashing corns and like true slaves no one in position is willing to do it. The merchants suck the people dry and what is left the house slaves in parliament take in tax and mismanage. And on top of all of this no one is cogniscent that these old colonial systems is the major cause of all the major problems and crimes in this place. From education to religion is faux. Just bamboozle after bamboozle. And truth be told these peoples are not African either sir.

Nothing adds up. Especially the fact that black people have no affinity to each other but yet born on the same Island, REAL strange. All species fend for each other as a group !! Freed from the chains but mentally enslaved !!

Plus when you telling lies, nothing adds up. Like, in an Island when the majority of the population is black. Why dont they choose their OWN education and why aren’t there any pictures of black Jesus….

Are we going to continue being a welfare state? What assistance to the poor we keep talking about? Why are they poor? We all attend the same schools, eat the same school’s meals, get the same state funded medicals.

We owe it to ourselves to learn a skill, and make sure our children does the same. Our people are still looking for jobs, we still want to go do a government appointed job, do little or nothing all day and get paid. Once a government can’t provide this system or welfare, it’s not a good government.

The time has come for us to produce and trade, offer services, while paying our taxes, so our children can continue to benefit like we did. I thank my late father, who explained to me quite early that state funded education, medical services and the welfare system from which many around us benefited was not free, but paid for by workers like himself who paid their contributions.

These burglaries are a result of those seeking items to send abroad to pay for drugs. The criminal network is a regional network, and the sooner the regional authorities engage the retailers of appliances to add some features to the bar coding the sooner we will get on top of this trading of appliances for drugs.

@KK – you said it good.

“The welfare state is a concept of government in which the state plays a key role in the protection and promotion of the social and economic well-being of its citizens. It is based on the principles of equality of opportunity, equitable distribution of wealth, and public responsibility for those unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions for a good life. The general term may cover a variety of forms of economic and social organization.[1]The welfare state involves a transfer of funds from the state to the services provided (i.e. healthcare, education, etc.) as well as directly to individuals (“benefits”). It is funded through redistributionist taxation and is often referred to as a type of mixed economy.[6] Such taxation usually includes a larger income tax for people with higher incomes, called a progressive tax” (taken from wiki).

We keep talking about welfare state and encouraging these governments to faulter from their commitment to the upliftment of the poor etc. Can we honestly say that that there is equality of opportunity, and equitable distribution of wealth in this or any society. There will always be the poor within any society, especially due to the fact that this government continue followed it oppressors model of education = academics, to feel fit in. Such problems will have a knock on effect on the majority in this country e.g robbery – not the rich, them safe.
What are these villains to do, take taxes from the poor people and use it for their personal uses and on concessions etc for the rich who cannot get the same in them own country of origin and smile all the way to the bank. While we people out here struggling and suffering. These politicians need to be held accountable for the public purse. Or stop take out the people RH taxes and NIS that them mismanaging daily and spending on everyone and anything else except on the services for this people. Every social entity under water in this place while the rich await the big sales to inflict more hardships. All of the social funded enterprises is the same as yesterday, nothing new.

The government should not have to take the blame for people breaking into your home, taking what they want and injuring you in the process. Many of us grew up at a time when things were hard and we did not steal. We made do with what our parents could afford to give us. Many of the robbers do not rob to feed their families; they rob to buy drugs and brand name clothes. You can visit the Welfare Department or local post offices and you will see the assistance that is given to persons, some of whom should not even be the beneficiaries of this assistance. For instance, the welfare is paying for houses for women and children and you can see big strong men lodging at these houses and better still, some women cannot draw the welfare money before men are there to take the money from them. These young men need to be taught that they must work for what they want the same way that the person who they rob had to work for what they steal.

They are opetating like ABSENTEE Administrators with the ‘Primus into Parris’ being the biggest ABSENTEE.

    Luther one Question for you and sorry for the late response ,had another busy day ;
Do you mean blame ? or responsobility ?
I believe we cast too much blame on every one but our self.
I happen to be in a Bank that was robbed by $ persons ,maybe some of the connections might have been in the bank to get first hand info on any eye witnesses and to inform on who gage statements , but i am only being overly suspicious.
but let me tell you all this and take serious not ,it took 3 minutes and they were loaded and gone ,never Caught . can you tell me how the A/G or the Police would prevent that? The Crooks are very smart and very strategic. It is not easy to break a criminal mind ,sometimes I believe they are Aided By Hard Core Criminals From Far and near . I don’t have answers ,Please stop the blame game and work out solutions
Daizy king : If you had 1/10 the Smarts of PM Stewart you would be Amazing ;Do you think he is dotish ,just because he Don’t Do What ?? I Know he is Brilliant .
