Sagicor General responds to hurricane victims in Dominica

Residents of hurricane-ravaged Dominica have already started to restore and rebuild with the assistance of regional insurance company, Sagicor General Insurance.

 Just weeks after Hurricane Maria, a category five system unleashed its fury on Dominica, on September 18, Sagicor General Insurance has been able to start settling claims and assist in advancing the process of  returning life to normalcy on the “Nature Isle”.

 Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development for the regional insurer Mark Blakeley has reported that to date more than 50 per cent of claims from both private and commercial customers had been received and payments were being handed over to affected clients.

Mere days after Hurricane Maria, packing winds in excess of 150 miles, struck the island, senior Sagicor General representatives, dalong with others from local agents Whitchurch and WillCher, were on the ground assessing damage, reassuring clients and assisting in the restoration effort.

“Customers and affected communities have been thanking us repeatedly for our quick response to their needs for assistance in very difficult times. It is still a very challenging environment for loss adjusters and insurance executives but as a company we are very sympathetic to the needs of our clients and their families. We have been working diligently to assist and in many cases we were able to partner with banks and provide cash settlements in as little as 48 hours”, said John Chandler, Assistant Vice-President of Claims with Sagicor General.

 With such settlements coming so soon after a major catastrophe, several home-owners have been praising the company .

Commercial client Hilkiah Lavinier, who operates the Miniya’s chain of supermarkets in Roseau and other areas, was among those full of praise for the insurance company as Sagicor executives were able to provide him with a significant cash settlement within 48 hours of loss assessments.

This interim cash settlement of around 40 per cent of the claim to Lavinier, mainly for repairs and re-purchasing of stock for the supermarkets, not only got him back on his feet, but it also had a positive impact on the wider community, as residents were able to access food and other essential items.

“As an A-rated company by AM Best, we boast a strong record of settling claims quickly, even in catastrophes, and we are happy to do what we do best for our clients and the people of Dominica. We will be there with them, taking care of their insurance needs,” said Chandler, who has been on the ground in Dominica.

In addition to providing early settlements, the Sagicor group of companies has been moved to give even more.

Along with sending a variety of essential items to the country, provided by staff and the Sagicor group of companies, the Sagicor Group has also partnered with regional airline LIAT and committed US$20,000 to the inter-island carrier to assist in moving relief supplies , as well in mobilizing flights to take relief workers into Dominica and vulnerable persons – including small children, the sick, and elderly – out of the country.
