Beware of dead people, warns Gill

An outspoken Barbados Labour Party (BLP) reject last night blasted the main Opposition party, which he had previously represented in four elections, suggesting that its internal membership lists could not be trusted.

In fact, political turncoat David Gill, now a candidate for the newly configured United Progressive Party (UPP), claimed there was at least one list with “an addendum of all dead people”.

Gill, 61, who served as Member of Parliament for St Michael South Central from 1999 to 2003 in an Owen Arthur-led BLP administration, but lost the seat in his three subsequent outings, announced his departure from the Opposition party last October shortly after losing his bid to carry its banner for a fifth straight election.

Following that October 3, 2016 contest, which was won by newcomer Marsha Caddle, an upset Gill had complained that he did not enjoy the support of the party mechanism.

And it appeared that time had not yet acted as a healer for the jilted politician who was scathing in his criticism of his former party, while alleging crooked acts, vindictiveness and political misdeeds.

A fired up Gill spoke of people going “under a tree at midnight [to] get people to sign a form and move with it” in the lead up to a recent BLP nomination.  He also said he met a non-constituency members who claimed to have received notification to vote even though they had never filled out forms.

Gill also reported that at least one person was duped into filling out a membership form under the impression that he was entering a competition for a prize and that during the nomination process, people were posted outside a housing area on mornings, asking residents “you want to become a member?”

Gill also said he saw a party official with an envelope containing what the official claimed to be a supplementary membership list, “[but] when I look at the addendum, it was an addendum of all dead people.

“I say . . . you could fool them little young boys that come in here and want a seat, but you can’t fool me. These are dead people, an addendum of dead people,” Gill said.

Appearing on a UPP platform for the first time last night at Quakers Road, Carrington Village, Gill further accused the Mia Mottley-led main Opposition party of engaging in “political ethnic cleansing” against members who dared to associate with its former leader and ex-Prime Minister Owen Arthur after his resignation back in July, 2014.

“All hell broke loose because the administration [of the BLP] felt then that anybody who spoke with Arthur, who might have gone to his house, who might have gone to his lectures, should be removed. They underwent what they call political ethnic cleansing,” Gill charged.

He said the rooting out of perceived Arthur supporters was carried out in such a way to make dictators such as Cambodia’s Pol Pot “look like Sunday schoolboys”.

In a fiery address, Gill also charged that the BLP hierarchy, in particular party leader Mia Mottley, had “wiped the floor’ with Dr Maria Agard, the incumbent Christ Church West Member of Parliament.

“I was at Foundation [School] that evening when I saw how they put Maria Agard, then a very ill lady and wiped the floor with her. I said, ‘oh my God, how could one female be so cruel to another female?’

“I remember the leader saying if you don’t get in line, I have the authority to deal with you.”

“Every man in law is entitled to a fair hearing, and Maria did not have a fair hearing and that night I left Christ Church at 11:05 [pm] I told them politics will not be the same in this Barbados Labour Party again,” said Gill, adding that the treatment of Agard, who was expelled from the party in 2015, was “one thing that has hurt me through my political career”.

It is time for all political parties, if they are to survive and be innovative, that they must get the youth involved. It is time for many of those dinosaurs, to step away gracefully and let new blood and ideas to flow.
It is disturbing to see a constant parade of has been, who continue to be like patrons at a a party staying a tad too long.
These people begin to suffer from Mugabenitis , and political senility.

  16. luther thorne October 24, 2017 at 5:54 am

Foolisness Sam Clarke, you talking about age . Age should not be used to discrimìnate in the matter. So for you age in a negative way is really Sad ! You start wrong. Everybody is valuable and you need to be more respectful. Change your attitude now that you have the chance.

beware of politically dead addendum like David gill..

  21. Mark Adamson October 24, 2017 at 8:24 am

David Gill has shown the capacity to mount a platform and speak about issues that have been affecting him.

What about those who are messaging about “losing a deposit”??
    Such grammatical meaningless!!

To run in an election and to run with the fundamental social political material and financial interest of the people in the particular constituency one is running in and the country as a whole one one’s chest plate is a most noble and humanistic deed.

Being a candidate in a national election is the highest point the average person can go in this deficient national political system of Barbados.

Rather than not taking your selves seriously politically a la your messages may be those
detractors ought seriously examine the worth of their
contributions to the political system and realize that the 250 $ is the contribution that each candidate must make to a system that ensures that any one – as a candidate – gets various political electoral material and services during the election.

Whenever a successful candidate gets 250 $, he or she gets it in a most vulgar and venal way – even if legally – and within a context whereby these parliamentarians in Barbados are seen to have been presiding over yet another system whereby they intend to milk the broad masses and middle classes of people of financial allowances on top of financial allowances.

Finally, imagine that these people who are messaging about candidates “losing their deposit”, I believe, do not understand that the 250 $ that successful candidates get has been crafted out of a an evil wicked financial/TAXATION system that are oppressing and oppressing them daily.

Yet they laugh!! Being unaware of their own victimization??

    • Oliver Smith October 24, 2017 at 8:33 am

Mark Adamson you want a soft loan for the $250.00?

      • Mark My Word October 24, 2017 at 9:49 am

Ollie old girl give thee $250 to the Salvation Army although you need it more

        • Oliver Smith October 24, 2017 at 10:24 am

Good advice Mark. Much better spent there. But I will give it will not be a loan.

  22. Oliver Smith October 24, 2017 at 8:26 am

Rejection is always hard to take, but David you need to move past it and give us your new Party’s solutions to the many problems we face as a country in the 21st Century. We want to know how the UPP will make our lives easier.

Cussing the BLP ain’t cutting it. Don’t be fooled by the few Dems in the crowd who might cheer.

  23. Sue Donym October 24, 2017 at 9:40 am

So the once honourable Mr Gill remained with and supported politicians that he knew to be unethical – until they dropped him. Why should anyone trust him?

  24. Adrian Hinds October 24, 2017 at 9:51 am

If Gill and Lynette hates Mia Mottley then they are in concert with the vast majority of Bajans. BLP supporters are fooling themselves in believing a Wickham poll that Bajans enmasse will vote for a political party simply because it is led by Mia Mottley. She is Damage goods. The next general election will be truly 30 bi-elections held on the same day with voters voting for a candidate base on their preception of how good he or she has ministered to their local deeds with a few exceptions like St.Thomas and St. John which always vote party no matter who is going to be PM.

    • straight talk October 24, 2017 at 5:03 pm

  26. Saga Boy October 24, 2017 at 10:57 am

These BLP fowls seem to think they are the only ones capable of ruling Barbados and further that only their opinions manner. They want us to believe that BLP Politicians are saints, have done no wrong and all of them going heaven. They think we forget Edutec, the dump, etc. This coming election will not be a walkover. It will be hard fought.

  27. Mark My Word October 24, 2017 at 11:15 am

If David Gill is a political turncoat
Errol Barrow was one he left the BLP and form DLP
    Patrick Tannis is turncoat
    Kerrie Symmonds
    Trevor Prescod
    Ralph Thorne
    Owen Arthur
and the list goes on wunna got something fuh David Gill cause he from Carrington Village

Mark Mark Mark as for you. You need to start carrying yourself properly if you really want people to take you serious selling socks and smelling you before seeing you is not going take you to parliament. All of them friends that got you walking Broad Street with placards should tell you so. Gill needs to understand in any party and you are a weak link you are asked to sit back and help out in other ways. Can’t keep pipe dreams of his of being a minister when clearly the people have rejected you on more than one occasion. Get a grip and move on. Get counseling anything but you need to move on.

  29. Mark My Word October 24, 2017 at 1:37 pm

  30. luther thorne October 24, 2017 at 4:10 pm

I can understand wuh Gilly mekking noise bout. Hang in there and hold a lil pick after de election. The DLP gas not done a good job and should be kicked out. They have destroyed Barbados’ çredit rating. They have struggled with the economy , roads, transport, garbage , UWI, Whitehill, Water, Sewage and even Crop Over they have destroyed. They have no ideas to benefit and carry the Country to the next level. Simple. Anybody who says different is as blind as a certain Moderator who wants us to believe that this Government has no faults.

    • straight talk October 24, 2017 at 5:12 pm

That moderator said she is a child of God but I still hear she saying that when she don’t like you, you will know

  31. Randolph October 24, 2017 at 6:49 pm

I was shocked to hear Maureen Holder say that she will not always forgive. Is this what Jesus told His disciples to do?

  32. ebaje October 24, 2017 at 6:53 pm

What is so funny about Mr.Gill’s rant is that even after he saw how they “wiped the floor’ with Dr Maria Agard”, he still sought the nomination to run for the party. Clearly, Gilly just upset because the party has nominated young Caddle, who is a superior candidate to him.

  33. Randolph October 24, 2017 at 7:55 pm

Gill needs to realize that it is the constituents that have rejected him and not the BLP.How many times must they reject him?

  34. archy perch October 25, 2017 at 5:45 am

  36. Greengiant October 26, 2017 at 3:23 pm

Why do some of you have to ostracize people who clearly against the old guard of D L P / B L P? If he’s going to lose his deposit, so be it. He has the courage to be a candidate and has a right to speak whether we like it or not.

Guess you sad faced supporters who represent these two dead beat parties can only see a Barbados managed by either of them. The time has come for change, several of our politicians are only successful when there is a national swing, or their leaders are popular. Otherwise they have little or nothing to offer the country.

The members of the alternative parties are as intelligent or more educated and capable than many of the candidates from the two main parties. The reason why we can’t get good management of our business is because the majority whether in Government or opposition have little or no experience managing anything.

  37. Greengiant October 26, 2017 at 3:42 pm

Gill through his knowledge and personal experience can tell you what effect dead people has during any poll.
