Mottley probe on

Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite will be presented with a letter tomorrow, calling for an investigation into the requirements necessary to practise law in Barbados.

General Secretary of the ruling Democratic Labour Party George Pilgrim told a press conference at the party’s George Street headquarters this afternoon that after some delay, the letter was finally ready for delivery to the Attorney General, calling on him to clear the air on the requirements.

Pilgrim recalled that the decision to write to Brathwaite was taken at the ruling party’s general conference last month at which a resolution was adopted questioning the qualifications of Opposition Leader Mia Mottley to practise law here.

Look what desperation can do! While you are at it, send a letter to the editor Acting Governor-General stating that as a result of the many downgrades and the loss of confidence in the present DLP administration, you will like to go to the polls forthwith.

The DLP is running scared of Miss. Mottley, what they`re are doing is opening a can of worms, most of the attorneys in Barbados are dishonest and this would qualify then for jail if they were in N. America. Miss. Mottley don`t need a law degree to be PM. not even the Supreme Court in the USA a law degree is needed. Mia have to know who is straight and who is crooked in the DLP take them to court on behalf of the people.

    • Jennifer October 20, 2017 at 4:28 am

Do people not understand this is about ????? Integrity, which is a favorite pop down weapon especially in politics. Or r we saying that Barbados is so ridden in thieves, users, usees, and liers, that this has mow become the norm for people to side step integrity.

    • j-mott October 21, 2017 at 11:33 pm

hcaindre if you don’t know what you are talking about, just shut up. For one to be on the US Supreme court you had to be a sitting Judge, there fore you have to at one time been practicing law and HAVE a law degree.

  14. Saga Boy October 19, 2017 at 11:33 pm

Running scared? Either she is qualified or she has been a pretender all this time. Let her produce her qualifications. You people behave as though she is a saint? How can you forget Greenland and Eductec? And four seasons and gems and bend wood

    • Randolph October 21, 2017 at 7:33 am

Saga Boy if she has been practicing law without the necessary qualifications all these years don’t you think that is the fault of the judges and the system who admitted her?the DLP is like a drowning man catching at a straw.

  15. Oliver Smith October 20, 2017 at 12:13 am

Do any of you educated commentators really believe that Sir Denys Williams, Chief Justice and Maurice King, then Attorney-General would have allowed someone to be called to the Bar that was not qualified so to do. Man piss in much pocket.

This is a DLP/UPP red herring solely for the purpose of attacking this woman.

It is childish foolishness. I notice that it has not in any way affected her high popularity rating. Give it rest do.

    • Randolph October 21, 2017 at 7:36 am

Oliver you are so right I believe it will make her more popular.Let them continue.

  17. Bajan boy October 20, 2017 at 12:26 am

They should investigate who bought votes in the last election. Or who left their wife and children to live in a house in Gall Hill St. John with the Woman police and then promoted her to Sergeant. Who does drive the little green Yaris every night to the same woman house that they made a Judge.
Whether she is lawyer or not does not qualify her to be our next PM as nd that she will be. There is a Judge who has the same qualifications and no one questions him and he is the one we should be absolutely sure is qualified. Let those losers continue to catch at straw and take our country further down the gutter. No one cares about no law degree Freundel got one and is the worst thing you could ever want for a Man or human beign.

  19. archy perch October 20, 2017 at 12:57 am

Ever professional in Barbados must be qualified and registered annually.
All she has to do is produce his Degree/Degrees from the London School of Economics that’s all. Only then will this issue be put to rest.
It was Mia who – in June 2015- questioned the qualifications of Dr. Denis Lowe.
    This should be interesting.
Imagine someone could be practicing law in Barbados for years, and we did not know it was bogus.

  20. Just Gypsying October 20, 2017 at 12:58 am

Instead of probing the Leigh Trotman report and answering where the money the taxpayers of this country have been sacrificing for years has gone to, these clowns busy hunting down nothing.
Who is bringing in the big guns that are cutting down our young people…probe that.
Who is bringing in the drugs through the ports…probe that.
Why is Barbados in the rut it is in economically and who has benefited from the DLP largesse…probe that.
When will UWI, UCAL, NIS, Taxpayers, etc be paid…probe that.
    About these twenty downgrades…probe that.
When all is said and done no probe or airy fairy nonsense will prevent Miss Mottley from being PM because it is not a requirement to lead and lead she must because under this administration, leadership has been languishing and the evidence is clear for the world to see. #fixit

  24. Ron October 20, 2017 at 4:22 am

They also need to write a letter to the COP asking him to investigate the new found wealth of some of their ministers who couldn’t pay their rents or afford proper cars a couple years ago,but now owns some of the most expensive houses and drives top of the line vehicles.
Also asked him to probe the cost over runs at the Thompson monument and the housing scandals at the NHC.

    • hcalndre October 20, 2017 at 7:20 am

Ron; this is what confuses me, a poor fella could not pay his rent, scrunting, cheating clients out of their money and hiding, get elected and in one term he owns land, homes, cars and cash and wearing the latest so how is it that they can`t use that same method to get the country financially stable. Can any do the math and see what a person would have to earn to have that wealth in such a short time? The AG says he is going after people that owns homes and driving expensive vehicles whom he think obtain them through illegal means, having a job don`t make a person exempt from being investigated, hope he is not selective in his endeavor.

  25. Jennifer October 20, 2017 at 4:42 am

  29. Lee R October 20, 2017 at 7:53 am

  30. hcalndre October 20, 2017 at 7:55 am

Barbados have some Trumps there too, Trump questioned Pres. Obama`s birth certificate, but even if the court asks Miss. Mottley to produce her proof of her law degree, she should not, knowing some time ago, two politicians refused to appear in court on an issue Mia brought because they are above the law and the PM told the court that Comissiong don’t have the right to challenge him in court.

  31. andy g October 20, 2017 at 8:22 am

You don’t have to be a lawyer to be a politician or become a pm so leave that part out. This is about integrity.and being a lawyer like many other professions, don’t allow you to practice any have to have the qualification of the country that you want to practice .She could be the greatest lawyer out of the uk ,but if she did not go through the Barbados requirements ,and practice law in Barbados .that represent fraud

  32. Seless Semore October 20, 2017 at 9:22 am

Imagine this same DLP drop the qualifications for Chief Justice for a man that wasn’t even near what we had before. Just playing politics . George could take several seats nobody take him serious any way. Waste of air and space. Go back to the drawing board and write up wanna list of tricks again. How low wanna going to go this time make sure when wanna going down wanna don’t show that most of the DLP not qualified.

  33. Mark Adamson October 20, 2017 at 9:58 am

I publicly support the efforts of the relevant authorities to investigate Mottley’s legal qualifications – which ought to have been in line with relevant provisions of the local Legal Profession Act.

Mottley was clearly given a legal exemption from the requirements.

Why and under what circumstances though was Mottley instructed by a High Court Judge to be admitted to practice law in this country.

Henry Forde – in his public comments on the issue a few years back – failed to address such fundamental concerns.

He failed miserably to tell whether she did poorly in her law studies.

    • roger headley October 20, 2017 at 10:08 am

What role did National Hero Errol Walton Barrow, Sir Maurice King etc. play in this? Mark Adamson, your petticoat is showing.

No one is above the Law

  38. Kevin October 20, 2017 at 11:11 am

If Mottley didnt open her mouth and ask Lowe about his qualifications in her budget reply none of this would have happen. She brought this on herself.

  43. Sylvan Greendge October 20, 2017 at 2:54 pm

I have said repeatedly that all Ms. Mottley has to do is present the necessary qualification and this matter would go away. But if she does not have the qualification then I have a few questions. 1. If Ms. Mottley had found out that Mr. Lowe did not have his qualification what would she have done? 2. Would she not have made it a political issue? 3. If she does not have the requisite qualification has she not broken the law? 3. Is she not now a member of our esteem Parliament – house of legislators – law makers? 4. How do you make laws and break them at the same time? 5. Is Ms. Mottley not considered a successful lawyer having earned well from a law practice? 6. Without the requisite qualification would it not make her practice a criminal offence? 7. How do the laws of the land and the rules and regulations of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission deal with a matter of this sort? 8. What jurisprudence do we have from other jurisdictions in dealing with this matter? 9. If this matter is not fairly and fully dealt with or we not sending the wrong impression that there is about two Barbados’ and that white colour is ok? 10. What message are we sending to the international community like the IMF, rating agencies, Transparency International and the rest? There are certainly more questions than answers and I hope we, the electorate can get some answers soon.

    • ebaje October 20, 2017 at 3:20 pm

      What is the required qualification?

      • Ras October 20, 2017 at 6:35 pm

        Ediot baje

The required qualification is a Law Degree (LLB) and a Legal Education Certificate from Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad or Norman Manley law School in Jamaica

Idiot baje Ms Manley never went to get the Legal Education Certificate you understand now

        • ebaje October 20, 2017 at 7:29 pm

Ohh I am an ediot…do all lawyers in Barbados have the LEC? By the way the LEC is available at Eugene Dupuch Law School in The Bahamas too, but I guess that was included in your YF package.

    • hcalndre October 21, 2017 at 3:32 am

andy g; these bunch of lawyers that study law at UWI, can`t win a case against attorneys from outside of Barbados. Lawyers are about a dozen a dime in Barbados. that`s all Barbados produces, technical skills are needed in today`s world.

    • hcalndre October 21, 2017 at 3:44 am

@sylvan Greenidge; What Miss. Mottley would have done if Lowe did not had qualifications? what is his? at one time I thought that he was a MD. hearing doctor Lowe, doctor Lowe, so often. He is just another one of those false profits hiding behind the bible.
