Judge extends deadline given to prison authorities

High Court judge Sonia Richards today extended until Thursday, today’s 4:30 p.m. deadline by which this country’s Superintendent of Prisons Colonel John Nurse was to return the property of the Prison Officers Association and provide it with suitable accommodation.

The move came a day after Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson rejected an application made by Principal Crown Counsel Anika Jackson and Crown Counsel Deidre Gay-McKenna for a stay of the order issued last week by Richards.

They had argued that Richards’ decision amounted to a final order instead of an interim one and deprived the prison’s superintendent of the right to be heard. The lawyers also said the decision granted relief to the claimants before their case is heard in the High Court on December 7.
