CARIFESTA exhibitor dies

It has turned out to be a not so happy 13th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA XIII) for the delegation from Guyana, following the sudden death of one of its members.

Barbados TODAY understands that Petol Frank, who had been showcasing her specially made hats at the CARIFESTA XIII Grand Market, fell ill on Tuesday evening and was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she passed away early this morning.

Members of the delegation appeared visibly distraught today at the Grand Market which is taking place at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

One woman who said she was very close to Frank, said she could not believe this was the way their trip had turned out.

However, a senior member of the delegation who opted not to give her name said she was instructed not to speak to the media.

Why would anyone want to put careful just after CROP OVER. When people already spent ALL of their money on CROP OVER.

Well Barbados should have taken a pass. Not sure the other countries have festivals prior to hosting such a regional event! No way was the whole carifesta Barbados was a success 500 events spread out too many in one day/night poorly organized. Looks like one big shopping spree except for the entertainment and workshops oh well it’s almost done hope the delegations who came aren’t too disappointed in attendance to a lot of events

Gillian Skeete I understand you but we can not change the dates. The dates are solid for every country every two years. If an when goes Grenada or st .Vincent it’s the same thing. Their festival is the same time as ours. It was just organized not so good.

Condolences to friends and family, do not know the circumstances but it cannot be an easy thing, coming here and setting up maintaining a booth .I ask one young lady if she got to see any part of the Island, she said it was just her and she could not leave the booth. Make me realize we need to embrace our neighbors and make their stay worth it

CARIFESTA is the perfect opportunity to meet neighbours and learn the similarities and differences. I hope some lovely Bajan girl took that young lady out one evening. At least by St Lawrence gap

Please tell us when would be the best time to hold CARIFESTA. After school starts we are broke because of back to school . Early in the new year we are broke because of Christmas. Somewhere in the middle for sure I am paying my taxes as I am self employed . We then start summer and everyone is travelling and preparing for college new school etc.

On another note CARIFESTA includes many students of the arts and primary and secondary students who in the first part of summer need a break or in camps. So I say again when would be the best time; and from what i know it is not a yearly event. I really would like to know.

@Patrice, it just goes to show that the almighty dollar bill , US or BDS seems to matter more than the unfortunate circumstances of a fellow Caribbean person.
