Time management did it for Richards

Kyron Richards is a man of many skills. This 18-year-old competitive swimmer and entrepreneur can now add a Barbados Scholarship to his list of achievements.

The former Harrison College student admitted to Barbados TODAY that his road to becoming a Barbados scholar was not one of a child always focused on schoolwork.

“To be honest, in junior school I used play a lot and get in trouble a little bit….But when I got into senior school and it was CSEC [Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate] time, I put in the work,” he said.

Richards, who also has baking and clothing businesses, said time management was a very big part of his success.

“I am a fairly busy person [but] I made sure I found time to do work and time to study,” he said.

Richards was not in Barbados when the results were announced. In fact, he was off doing one of the things he loves most.

“I was actually…in Guyana at a swimming meet. I didn’t have Wi-Fi…but I got a message from my mom saying ‘you did it; so proud’,” he recalled. “She didn’t say the words ‘you got the scholarship’, so I was trying to call her but I didn’t get through because the Wi-Fi was very bad.”

When Richards eventually got through to his mother and heard the great news, he said it was “a very big relief and very good feeling”.

He will be heading off to McGill University in Montreal, Canada to study mechanical engineering.
