Cleric defends church against Morris’ attacks

A day after Anglican cleric Charles Morris slammed his own church for not getting involved in the fight against rising gun violence, a fellow priest has come out in defence of the religious institution.

Morris yesterday accused the church of losing its voice amid an atmosphere of fear due to rising crime, telling Barbados TODAY the church’s leadership “for the past 17 years has been so silent on social issues that it is almost deafening”.

He accused his fellow clerics of being money grabbers, stressing that “the church is not setting any example because rather than trying to assist the development of society, all they are doing is talking about money and more money”.

However, Reverend Selven Lowe of the All Saints Anglican Church in Benn Hill, St Peter firmly disagreed, insisting that the Anglican church was “very active in terms of helping the youth to develop and grow.

“Individual churches they are working with their youth, organizing programmes. As I said you won’t be able to reach everybody but it so happens that the real trouble trees that you would really like to reach they are drifting because they have one focus in mind. But the ones you are able to reach out to they are coming around,” Selven said.

Describing the current crime wave as “very disturbing”, the clergyman recommended stiffer penalties for offenders, and for the wheels of justice to turn more quickly.

Lowe told Barbados TODAY if those found guilty of gun crimes were punished severely and swiftly, it would send a serious message to anyone thinking about committing similar offences.

“It is very disturbing. It is somewhat frightening people in their homes, innocent people at that. Something of a very serious nature has to be done in order to combat this crime situation. Regardless to what we try sometimes do not work but I think you need to look at the penalties and try to lift them somewhat,” he said.

The religious leader said too often those involved in criminal behaviour felt if they were incarcerated they would be free within a few years. Additionally, Selven said, sometimes cases drag on for much too long, and some have to be thrown out as a result, giving perpetrators the feeling that “something can be done for them when they do wrong.

“So I think that there need to be a way in which they [cases] can be urgently dealt with, and when I say dealt with, I mean dealt with a very heavy hand. Yes, you are going to find some lawyers coming out saying it is unfair and what’s not, but they have to make their money so they have to talk. But the powers that be they really need to put these types of systems in place.”

With the 23 murders committed so far this year surpassing last’s year’s total of 22, the church leader blamed broken family structures and disappearing family values.

“The fundamental aspect of this whole thing stems from the home base. If the home is not fundamentally strong it will fall and that is what is happening. There are children who are mothers who did not get that parental guidance that they would need,” he said, going on to state that “now they are waiting on the schools and the church to make it right, but you have to get back to basically what is happening in that home”.

He said those behind the rising violence were in the minority, nevertheless “it is that minority that needs to be heavily dealt with, and when that is done it sends a very strong message, not a tap on the shoulder, and say, ‘go ahead and see how that works’, but a strong message that a guy will be able to say, ‘look, don’t go that road boy, you won’t like what will happen’,” Selven stressed.

This is a real Reverend, and a former law enforcement officer as well. I am sure he is one who can properly guide the youth in his organisation , Morris is a clown period.

The people to blame for the criminal madness , which has gripped our country is the politicians, they are the ones who people trusted with the security of barbados.. Politicians in barbados shows no real concern as to what happens to the black masses,
……….How many black people must die before something is done , we must see white folk getting shot before anything is done……………..Having policemen walking through an area is just game playing, people want to see things being done ………… Stop and search, search warrants to search certain people homes, lots of people in barbados knows the real criminals , but if people are protected what can local people do……….The only thing local people can do is be more careful ……………………………………….

Although Morris was correct. Until Mr Morris DEMONSTRATES THAT HE IS DIFFERENT OR CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE I am afraid that both Mr Lowe and Morris>>>>> is in the same church, same pew as a result of the same plantation training and mentality. It is amazing that after nearly 400 yrs of chattel slavery the mentality and behavior of the people is the same. You people represent that ram caught in that thicket.

These guy do not know god’s laws, neither do they bring them to the people. {BIG MISTAKE} Why – fear of losing parishioners and money. Isaiah 56:10-12.

And our people is so bewitched, that the only truth they will ever accept is the truth of the romans aka Caesar and his cohorts.

Sometimes your radicalism overshadows your sense of reasoning Jennifer and it really makes it difficult to get the proper jist of what you are saying or trying to say.

          • jennifer August 24, 2017 at 6:32 am

Sherlock – Please understand this. Until this government which this majority people has put in place goes and revamps every institution of this minority there will be an uprising like you have never seen. There will be a catalyst and that is right around the next corner. All teachings to this people must be catered to meet the needs of this people. We are the only group of people who is happy with the indoctrination of any and every other nation/race of people. Check the Chinese, Asians, Japanese, etc. All of their teachings are catered to meet THEIR PEOPLES NEEDS. Can you honestly say that the teachings of the church caters to meet the needs of black people???????? Check it good before you reply.

There are things in this society which cannot be attacked on here because your speech will be garnished.

          • jennifer August 24, 2017 at 6:43 am

Sherlock – one such reference to the bible is Daniel 7:9 and Rev 1:14. Why do the church not swoop in on this and teach this people to love their appearance. You know why??? because this will be seen as radicalization as you so put it and distortion of social norms (TRUTH). Instead let them continue in sleep and feed the lions financially. And I got lots more.

These people don’t care , one paper had an article of “Iston as a BLOCK LEADER”. Go check that guy police record.

  5. Loretta Griffith August 24, 2017 at 6:09 am

Reverend Lowe has my wholehearted support. I agree the penalty should fit the crime.
They are too many hypocrites out there masquerading as holier than thou and being obstructionist.
All I hope and pray is that someone(s) will come forward and really revolutionize this little Barbados in a most positive way.
This Island has been on a downward trajectory for almost twenty five years. It appears that the motive for some persons getting into politics is not for uplifting country, but what one can accumulate post haste.
I honestly think the electorate should ensure that to the best of their knowledge they are sending the right persons to occupy a seat and really represent them in parliament. It should not be business as usual.
We need good governance. Not false hope.

  6. fedup August 24, 2017 at 6:15 am

    Morris always in something..steupse.

    • hcalndre August 24, 2017 at 3:05 pm

@fedup en al who think or say what Rev. Morris is speaking is anything different from the truth about what the churches and the politicians that they main goal is money, prove him wrong especially when they were mostly poor, they swear never again.

  7. Alex Alleyne August 24, 2017 at 6:30 am

If the Church leaders want to really do something I will suggest , go get their “flock” together and support “political change” across the board in how things are done in BIM. Let the Politicians know that (we) the church will VOTE for this party come election day.

  8. seagul August 24, 2017 at 8:05 am

Its time we get the ‘scum-bags’ at the top and not just the ‘pests’.
These scum-bags are the bourgeoisie judiciary elite, who the church is very silent about. Some of the so-call block leaders have done more for the under privilege than the gov. Imprisonment of an individual for a plant is the real crime. I’m not promoting cannabis smoking but we need to be more open-minded.

  9. Sheron Inniss August 24, 2017 at 9:02 am

Good morning Jennifer. Girl sometimes you just have to stop talking and do what you have to do and hope that you influence others. You can’t choose for others. If you believe in your heart and with all your being that your truth is correct DO NOT try to justify it to anyone. Live your life girlfriend and ask THE I AM to protect you and dance through life keeping your eyes on the prize.

    • Jennifer August 24, 2017 at 9:35 am

Good morning sharon. – thanks. This people don’t want any change they like batheing in deception and being drunken. If these priest ever awoke out of their state of stupor and bring what was in that Bible. This place would be crime free and drug free. Wow. Some people going broke too.

  10. jrsmith August 24, 2017 at 9:19 am

@,Jennifer, hail, hail, your (6:32 ) on the button good shot , you have also got to be aware our people is also scared of the politicians and frighten of the 1%ers , losing most of our people democratic rights…….. …. Harry shouldn’t have to call himself john to make a comment , on the destructive way the government is over seeing barbados …………………………………………….
@,Loretta ,G, hail, hail your (6:09)on the button as well, but our voters seems only to cast they votes for the party and only to secure, the jobs of politicians who seems not to work in the interest of the people, but for the interest of some people , for us to recover we need that change which not only worth talking about but putting in place……
First we need to take control , away from our bajan politicians and give our people back some respect and dignity…….. ……………..For me we need a an act of parliament , namely so the (Accountability Act 2017 ) giving the voters the automatic right to use the same votes which put the (MPs) in office, to remove them if they are not working on behalf of the people……..
Our people had 9 years of total pain and suffering , but couldn’t do anything to remove the politicians , other that sit and wait for the up coming elections………
People all just think of the outcome, if this same government is back in office , what would be the outcome we are doomed……

There is no easy solution to the problem of violent crimes in Barbados, and elsewhere. Many different factors are involved: educational, economic, religious, cultural, etc. Therefore if we all want to maintain a ‘Beautiful, Beautiful Barbados’ then everyone should ask him/her self, “How can I help to accomplish that goal?” It is so easy for some people to ‘point fingers at others’. Instead, there should be a concerted effort on behalf of all. So here are some suggestions.
It has been proven that reading problems encountered early in school contributes to crime, since it is one of the reasons for early school drop-out. On another occasion and with more available space I would be willing to expand on that. So I suggest that the home and the school should insist on teaching good reading skills.
As I have suggested on another occasion, I believe that it would send a very strong message to the Country and a solemn warning to criminals if the leaders of the various religions, and religious Christian denominations come together on a particular day in prayer and righteous condemnation of all those who are involved in these crimes, especially those who acquire their wealth from the importation of guns and drugs. Please, be the moral voice of the Country! Don’t cease to say, “Thus says the Lord”.
At the same time these same leaders should look at ways in which they can pool their resources to help to provide employment to youth, and also to reach out to those who have left prison and need ‘a second chance’. On another occasion I would be happy to expand on my suggestions.
So, rather than cursing the darkness, let each of us light a candle.

The church must get into the community and not the community get into the church

  13. Anthony Prescott August 24, 2017 at 10:15 am

A change in the Education System would help….We are trying to change behaviours after they have occured. Psychology and Black History would assist in moulding an individual and allow him to know himself. Hiding a person’s history is restricting their abilities to fulfil their potential. Everything area in society is in the control of the politicians and they refuse to change anything. They are making life very, very hard.

    • Jennifer August 24, 2017 at 10:49 am

@Anthony – Well said. Then the priest should lay their backup attack which is in the Bible. Then this tree will start to PRODUCE FRUIT. But these entities is stunting growth for the financial gain of the minority. Instead them doing all the old plantation style teachings and junk. But jer 23:1-2 for them.

      • hcalndre August 25, 2017 at 7:49 am

Jennifer; these politicians are not in office to help uplift the people and the country, they want to live in luxury for the rest of their lives. Why should people have to go begging a politician for money and a job in return for a vote? what the politician should be doing is providing what is necessary in his constituency for the benefit of the people and agencies where you can apply for jobs.

    • Carlos August 24, 2017 at 10:06 pm

When I went to school, I learned about the history of Britain. It didn’t stop me from knowing myself and it certainly didn’t restrict my ability to fuffil my potential. Stop making excuses!

  14. Kathy August 24, 2017 at 11:16 am

I don’t think that the government put guns in people hands and tell them to go out and shoot as they see fit. The problem stems from in the home. Teach your children manners, discipline them when they do something that is not right (that is if the parents knows right from wrong themselves) and many of societies problems will be solved. Stop blaming the church, government and everyone else for our own mistakes.

  15. Carlisle Norville August 24, 2017 at 11:40 am

Hail.Hail. Charles Morris thank you, SIR,, for your stance, the church has given the masses a false Jesus, blondish long hair with brown or blue eyes, Sunday worship x-mas, good Friday, ash Wednesday, now Valentines day, the Christian church founded by the roman empier does NOT teach the true doctrine of the CHRIST ,we have a white mans God that he gave us, all spiritually incline people would study their true African history first, & then look for the 50 books that the roman catholic church took out of the Bible ,so they can keep us believing, the lies they wrote in the kings james version ot the bible(we have prophets, pastors. apostles superintendents of the churches, & the list goes on ALL of them except for a very few, are only in the church buesness for the GOOD salary & benifits they get including good sex

    • jennifer August 25, 2017 at 2:22 am

@Carlisle N – Please do not thank Mr Morris for anything. Mr Morris is nothing more that a media spot-lighter. He will keep lying on his bed of Belial and up-keeping all of what you have listed and he will continue to work for the same bea$t system, fulfilling their goal of continued brainwashing and blinding of this people. Remember this people love the wickedness of their oppressors. All of them holidays is making the said oppressors rich and the masses poor. This is what lies and brainwashing does to a people. And Halloween is the new sickness role of this people.

  16. milli watt August 24, 2017 at 12:17 pm

I likes Morris was wondering where he was all the time……..found him. Church is a joke not now long time, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism all de isms. would like to put all dem in a slow leaking boat with salt fish to eat and salt water to drink to the end of never.

  17. jrsmith August 24, 2017 at 1:56 pm

Our young people need jobs , jobs, jobs …religion has confused the world ,more so black people , for lots of bible whackers , seeing a rainbow and the lightning flashing they think thats a miracle…the bibles have no history of, or for the black man …………..I want us black people to have our own black Jesus, the sooner the better…………..

  18. Alex Alleyne August 24, 2017 at 2:41 pm

The BIBLE was label by one leader as a “POISIONED BOOK”. I too believe that good paying JOBS, JOBS, and more JOBS will solve most problems. We all need MONEY to survive in this modern era. It’s going be worst as the USA become the only super power.

    • jennifer August 25, 2017 at 2:24 am

Alex – Don’t bash it until you have read it.

  19. Belfast August 25, 2017 at 12:24 am

The young and not so young people in Barbados do need jobs. But for the life of me, I cannot understand why almost every day we see notices by some known and unknown entities in the newspapers, stating their intention to apply for a work permit to bring in a non-national as no suitable local candidate could be found.
I was under the impression that under the reign of Mr. Barrow, that work if it was necessary to issue such work permits, provision was to be made to train a Barbadian to take over in a given period.
It is these unfair practices which have our youth literally up in arms.
Are we taking the children’s bread, and tossing it to the big breed dogs?

  20. Anthony Prescott August 25, 2017 at 10:43 am

Where does the Education System teach anyone that they are a spiritual being. Or that “we” need to nurture our spirit? The system doesnt help the situation…..The true purpose of Education is to cultivate the person’s mind spirt and soul and to teach us to give correct service to self, family and the community….but gun crime is rising, something isnt working !
