Morris claims church puts financial gains ahead of fight against crime

The hierarchy of the Anglican Church in Barbados has come in for a severe tongue lashing from a fellow man of the cloth, who is accusing the church of losing its voice amid an atmosphere of fear due to rising crime.

Following the Kadooment Day shooting during which a 20-year-old man lost his life and 18 other people were injured, the already burdened Royal Barbados Police Force is now tasked with investigating two murders that took place in the span of 24 hours, beginning with Sunday night’s shooting death of 40-year-old Orwin Les Moore of Water Street, Christ Church who died in a hail of bullets in Cane Vale, Christ Church.

Less than 24 hours later, Moore’s friend, 37-year-old Lodge Road, St Michael electrician Shawn Omar Taylor was gunned down in nearby Gall Hill.

In an especially scathing criticism of his own denomination, Reverend Charles Morris complained that despite the growing national fears over gun violence, the Anglican Church had yet to meet to devise a plan to help bring calm to the society.

“The leadership of the Anglican Church for the past 17 years has been so silent on social issues that it is almost deafening. We have not heard anything coming from the leadership of the Anglican Church in the wake of this year’s upsurge in gun violence,” Morris told Barbados TODAY.

“Right now the Anglican Church has its strategic plan and all it is pointing to is events. We spent an hour-and-a-half talking about a bazaar, which I must say I found quite bizarre. The strategic plan does not address any of the social issue surrounding the worrisome things going on in Barbados. As a matter of fact the church no longer has a prophetic voice, the voice of warning is not there,” he continued.

Making reference to the 23 murders committed so far this year – one more than all of last year, and 19 of which are gun related – the outspoken priest told Barbados TODAY that the Church had given up its social mandate in pursuit of riches.

“The Church is not setting any example because rather than trying to assist the development of society all they are doing is talking about money and more money. The Church is no longer interested in educating our young people about our God, and the way they preach this payment for salvation message, God does not make sense nor is he appealing to young people,” Morris explained.

“According to many of these churches, including the Anglican Church, God is a violent God that would kill people who commit sin so you keep this fear of hell there so that they can bring their monies and fill the coffers of the church. Then at the same time we have some of the same pastors driving all over Barbados with the most expensive cars. Now it is right to do that, but what kind of example is that for young people who do the same amount of praying as the pastor but will never get the same amount of material gain?” he stressed.

Morris has a history of taking on his own church, as well as the authorities, including delivering scathing remarks about Minister of Education Ronald Jones and the now retired Vere Parris, who had been serving as principal of Combermere School where Morris is a teacher.

In April of this year he also tore into the local Church over the controversial issue of sex education, charging its opposition to comprehensive sexuality education was hypocrisy.

He also told Barbados TODAY at the time that the churches had a knack for utterances which ran contrary to church doctrine, had a “warped view” of sex in today’s world and were engaging in “Christians’ preach” that was not based on reality.

“The church is the worse institution to get involved in the issue of sex education because it preaches ideals which do not reflect what is really going on with young people,” he said then.

“We have to move away from this warped view that everyone must accept that sex is reserved for marriage. That is the view Christians’ preach but in reality it is not what the Christians live by,” the provocative church leader had argued.

Barbados TODAY reached out to the archdiocese for a comment, but a promised reply had not been forthcoming up until the time of publication.

Ok. As long as he knows he is a cut from the same cloth. He is right as “,guilty conscience don’t let white eddoes cook”. All of them diaper full. ALL OF THEM want graduating to self cleaning mode, and make sure their hands washed.

Mr Morris you know full well the church CANNOT get any act together even if they wanted too. But it will climax this age. The baby can no longer be hid. The water is to the neck. Jonah will come forth.

I can’t agree with you more Johnathan. All the critics can do is find weakness in the messenger. We will all sit and drown because we prefer to criticise rather than do like Morris and seek solutions. We are in a right mess and burying our heads in the sand hoping. Continue to speak your mind brother Morris. Let those who want to talk you down bring alternative views.

Woe unto those who distort and corrupt the words of God who for their own vile imaginations seek to mislead people. There will come a time when this so called reverend will face God and if by then he has not repented of his Jackass alerts he will definitely see if hell is real or just part of his delusional imaginations. This man needs to be censored by the organization to which he belongs it boggles my mind as to why they have not denounced him i guess they are intimidated by him or they just want people to see how misguided he is. He always brings to mind that verse in the bible which says the fool says there is no God.

  15. Sherlock Holmes. August 23, 2017 at 7:55 am

Johnathan, Winnie Meade, Jackie Griffith, I agreed with you all and the Rev. is true in what he publish.
I go to church at an Anglican church and all the priest talks about is Events! Events! Events! Money! Money! Money!..
Some of those same critics of Rev. Morris are the same ones who will tell others that the church has fail the community.

Ever wonder why Morris cannot stay as rector of any church? It is not the Bishop that moves him – the congregation usually begs to get him off of them. He was even sued by a member of a congregation and the person won the case – he should have been made to pay back the church the money that had to pay out. When Priest going on vacation they do not even want him to ‘hold on’ for them – by the time they come back church in uproar. He is a tormented man and has been for a while.

  22. Coralita August 23, 2017 at 10:47 am

James 1:8 – A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Is this the same man who said, “you do not buy a pig in a bag”? In other words encouraging people to engage in sex before marriage. The same man who said fornication is not in the Bible? The same man who is always at war with the word of God?

Anyone with a modicum of commonsense knows that there are some who are involved in this prosperity gospel and milk their congregations but that is not in the majority. Most churches use their funds to assist members of their congregation and those of the community who are in need.

I will also say that a lot of non-church goers do not accept the church when they are in the community conducting house to house work, they hide and shut their doors and windows. However, when there is a crisis hear them calling for action from the same CHURCHES they rejected. The church can only know the needs of the community if the community engages the church instead of rejecting them. Also, the church should not pressure anyone to join their congregation but simple love people genuinely.

A lot of people like you find something about this man appealing and it baffles me as to why. This man constantly corrupts the word of God. He is a reprobate his is a doctrine of demons he is anti God and those of you who edify him will answer for it at an appointed and appropriate time unless there is rebuke and repentance.

Barbados was originally a Quaker’s paradise! They were called The Society of Friends. In local terms and lingo “The close Brothering”. Worldly fantasy was not becoming of them and they believed in excellence. Thomas Fisher and John Andrews were Quakers; two Barbadian planters whose daughters were imprisoned in Boston U.S.A for their spreading of their religious beliefs to the Black and poor whites. To this day they still plough their land with horse packs in Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

    • Belfast August 23, 2017 at 4:58 pm

It is believed that Plantantions in Barbados with such names as Pleasant Vale, Clement Rock, Friendship, Friendly Hall, Hope. Mount Pleasant, Retreat , Content, Strong Hope, Pleasant Hall
Endeavour were all owned by Quakers.

  27. Kathy August 23, 2017 at 12:21 pm

This man here is an attention-seeking, contentious, miserable excuse for a man. You talk all around your face to see what trouble you can stir up all the time. It really is time for you to take a seat and reflect on the choices you have made in your life. Since the separation of church and state, the church has had very little control over what occurs in society.

Bonita Weekes August 23, 2017 at 1:38 pm

Since you are part of the church what are you doing? Plantation owners no longer support the church but like any thing else the church needs money to operate . Do you want the church to tell people that sin is all right? We all have choices, if people choose wrong how can you blame the church. You are also part of the problem because I have heard you on TV talking about fornication, I would not waste time coming to listen to you. The job of the church is to preach God’s word not to make people feel comfortable with sin. That is what most people want, they want the church to conform to them, can’t happen. Thousands can turn out for fore day morning to serve Satan, who’s stopping them from going to church. It’s people with ideas like you that confuse people. You probably mean the church you belong to because I know of other churches who do out reach. One I know had a day for their men only and they were asked to bring sons, nephews and friends. If some invited did not turn up whose fault is that? You can’t go and drag them in and I know that church helps feed needy people, help people with other problems as much as they can financially because needs are great. Some may not get every thing they need but get what is possible. So how can the church help people without money?

    • Jennifer August 23, 2017 at 8:07 pm

@Bonita Weekes – Agreed. The church actually makes people feel comfortable in sin as they say you are saved by grace. And not under no law. Forgetting Matthew 5:17. One of the biggest problems with the church is that they adopted the teachings and style of the plantation owners/oppresor concerning the scriptures. So the plantation owners no longer have to support the church as they just left you with that rope and let you run along with it as far as it will run you on your neck. As I have said before all these past and present governments did not seek to reverse any of the brain washing or dummy doctrines placed on this people so this is why they are currently still immerse inside of the pullpit. The bible is not the problem, it is actually bringing what is written inside of it that is the problem. And you can mark my words, until the church start to bring what is written in the bible and PINNING it to the people whom it was written about and for, they will continue to see less and less people every year. Keep watching. At the moment EZK 37 is in the making. And to top all of the nonsense off CHRISTIANS HAVE BLATANTLY REFUSE TO RESEARCH THEIR OWN RELIGION.

  30. Belfast August 23, 2017 at 4:48 pm

I agree with some of the things Morris said, but if he is so critical of the Anglican Church, he should sever all ties with that organization, and open up his own shop.
He should stop running with the hare and hunting with the hounds, as we have seen a recent politician did, when he voted for a recent budget, then came to the people afterward with crocodile tears in his eyes.

  31. DE August 23, 2017 at 5:01 pm

From a lot of the comments that I have read, I realize that these comment are only express by what is heard on television and I can agreed with those who express their feeling about it. Judge ye not. Do not let the outside of a building stop you from knowing what is on the inside.
I say all of that because I will bet that almost all of you never take the time to hear Rev. Morris preach. What I gather is that most of you do not even go to church and those who go, go because of who the preacher is. Rev.Morris is not perfect, as a matter of fact none of us are but some of the same leader in the churches are doing their wickedness in a discrete manner, but in the sight of God they are no different than Rev. Morris

    • Coralita August 23, 2017 at 5:52 pm

Tek yah own advice. “Judge ye not”. You don’t know anything about anyone who blogged on this article. You don’t know who goes to church and for what reason they go to church. You don’t know what they heard and where they heard it. STOP THE ASSUMING. The only person you seem to know about is Morris himself.

Unless you are God!!! Declare yah hand!!!

  32. Malcolm Wood August 23, 2017 at 5:24 pm

Like Rev Morris, I believe the church (establishment) has abdicated its responsibility to the people. Sections of the church are in bed with the politicians – who have for some time abandoned the people, using their pulpits to spout partisan propaganda. Barbados has and is going through economic and resulting social upheaval. I would have expected by now instead of the empty church rhetoric that an ecumenical council would have been convened and developed a strategy approved by their various synods and presented it to Barbados. A strategy to get our ‘street walkers’ into dignity saving enterprise, to give our primary school kids breakfast, hope through legal business enterprise, or employment to our young men disenfranchised by the elitist educational system (does anyone remember CADEC and the Caribbean Conference of Churches and the work they did to help their communities by backing business ventures?). Rev Keith Griffith has the right idea at St. Clements in piloting a computer literacy programme for his parishioners. The negative comments about Morris’ position I think is reflective of the complete brain washing the church has successfully used in preventing people from thinking for themselves, acknowledging there is a crisis and using the only vehicle (the church) left which might have a semblance of moral authority to get our country off this ‘highway to hell’.

  33. Miche August 23, 2017 at 9:40 pm

Oh what a tangled web we weave

  34. Saga Boy August 24, 2017 at 6:09 am

if Morris would first start by attending classes and teaching his students that may help the situation. But he needs to tell us exactly what he has done to reduce the incidence of violence.

  35. Patty August 24, 2017 at 11:28 am

Mr. Morris…please read the word of God clearly and carefully…you have done a lot to mislead people down to perdition…You want to condone same sex marriages and encourage sexual promiscuity…
Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord. Jeremiah 23:1
