Education the passport for the future

Two students who are leaving the Darryl Jordan Secondary School are the latest recipients of the Indian Association of Barbados scholarships.

Saskia Singh expressed gratitude for the award in her acceptance speech.
Royeal Gaskin delivering a brief acceptance speech.

Royeal Gaskin and outgoing head girl Saskia Singh, both of whom principal Stephen Jackman said were exemplary students with leadership qualities, received monetary awards which will go towards their pursuit of tertiary education beginning next month.

Singh will study Spanish and Law at the Barbados Community College, while Gaskin is heading to the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic to pursue certification in Mechanical Engineering.

As far as Jackman was concerned, the scholarships were well-deserved.

He said Gaskin had come from humble beginnings, but had excelled in music and at the age of 14 could play any instrument that was handed to him.

As for Singh, the principal said she debated him often and had found a positive channel for that debating skill when she joined Toastmasters.

President of the Indian Association of Barbados and Honorary Consulate of India Dr Philomena Mohini-Harris said the scholarship awards were given as part of the organization’s celebration of India’s 70thanniversary of Independence on Tuesday.

Both students thanked the Indian Association for investing in their educational journey.

Congratulations to both of you, let this scholarship be just the beginning of many more great things coming your way. If handled correctly it can take you both where you want to be. Education is like the key to your very own home.
