Sir Roy not in charge at BWU, Moore says

General Secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) Toni Moore is making it clear that she is totally in charge despite having her predecessor around as an adviser.

She also dismissed the notion that the union was unable to survive without the retired Sir Roy Trotman, even as she made a stout defence of his continuing input well after his retirement.

Stating that she was grateful for Sir Roy’s ongoing contribution to the labour movement, Moore said the BWU did not buy into the popular belief that people’s contribution to society must end with retirement.

“We have had a history of people continuing to serve, especially when we saw that service as necessary to nurturing younger people under them and continuing to mentor people into the direction we would want to go and grow as an organization,” Moore said, while stressing that the union had made provision for retired people to continue to serve.

“Sir Roy is no different. One would have to appreciate that with his extensive experience at the national level, and his vast knowledge and contribution at the regional and international level, that the Barbados Workers’ Union considers itself fortunate that he could retire at a time where he can assist with growing and developing his successor and being around to watch that development take place,” she told journalists during a news conference today to announce the union’s 76 annual delegates conference scheduled for August 26 and September 2 at Solidarity House.

Sir Roy retired in September 2014, having served as general secretary since 1992.

Moore said she believed there was a deliberate “misrepresentation by naysayers that the union cannot do without Sir Roy or we need Sir Roy to maintain our contribution.

“I think that is a misunderstanding of many. What his presence does is it shores up the talent and the contributions that this organization has in its younger staff members who have embraced the philosophies of the organization, who have ensured that a change of guard will not in any way undermine our principles, will not in anyway undermine our contribution and will not in any way undermine the mission of this organization, which is to continue to serve people,” she explained.

“So Sir Roy’s position is not to be seen and observed as anything outside of adding value to the tremendous depth that we already possess in this organization,” the union boss said.

The upcoming conference will be held under the theme The Future We Want and is expected to attract approximately 600 members.

During the conference a number of resolutions will come up for discussion, including the topical issue of crime and violence; how the union can better contribute to the development of the country; retiring benefits; and constitutional amendments.

This lady just talks too much and it is primarily because she craves the limelight. Listen LADY when someone is in charge they do not have to announce it to the world everyone knows. It is only when there is doubt in a leader that he or she is really in charge that they run to any medium to cement in the minds of people that they are in fact in charge. This shows insecurity, at least it appears that way, as you had to come to the public with an explanation. Take some advice just shut up, you are seeking the limelight too much and your constant mouthings are slowly but surely eroding your relevance.

Oh please hope he is not the one giving her advice which would certainly throw public servants under the bus
Maybe it is a good thing for Moore to says he is not chargeor giving advice to save his crediibilty after her political grandstanding performance at the Social partnership meeting with her emerging looking like a backward fool
