Eye opener

A sales clerk who had a four-day “eye opening” experience at Dodds prison was allowed to go home today following a successful bail application by his lawyer.

Jason Jamar Carmichael, a resident of #1 Gunsite Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, is alleged to have threatened Adrian Belle on July 26 with the words “I want to kill you. I got bullets for you”, which caused Belle to believe that unlawful violence would be used against him.

The 25-year-old first appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and was remanded to prison. When his case was called up again today, Station Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls renewed the prosecution’s objection to bail, based on the nature and seriousness of the offence.

She argued that Carmichael had another matter pending in another court involving Belle who indicated that he feared for his life.

“He is currently on bail [and allegedly] made threats to the same complainant this year and is here again today on threats of a similar nature – threats to kill and shoot,” Carter-Nicholls said, adding that Belle and society needed to be protected from Carmichael.

However, defence attorney Mohia Ma’at said his client had a “cooling off” period while on remand and was now “cool as lemonade”.

“Up there was an eye opener and a place that he does not wish to revisit,” Ma’at said as he argued that Carmichael was a fit and proper candidate for bail, especially since he had no prior convictions.

The attorney’s application was approved and Carmichael was released on the condition that he stay at least a 100 yards from Belle and his property, say nothing to the complainant, and report to the Hastings Police Station every Tuesday and Thursday before noon with valid identification.

The case continues on October 31.

A touch of the “cat” will open up his eye. “Cool” is not going to work.
