Walcott rides triple to continue march to title

EDMONTON, Alberta, CMC – Barbadian Rico Walcott remained on course for an unprecedented seventh straight Northlands Park title when he produced a triple at the western Canada racetrack here Friday.

Riding on the eight-race card, Walcott picked up wins in race three with Sweet Wilko, race five with Laura B before wrapping up his haul in race eight with Charpetti.

Fellow countryman Kyle Carter also found himself in winner’s row, carving out a double by winning race four with favourite Storm Chaser and race six with 4-1 bet Trill Point.

Walcott leads the standings with 65 wins, 28 clear of second placed Trinidadian Keishan Balgobin, with Rigo Sarmiento third on 30.

Dane Nelson, who won once on Friday, is fourth on 29 wins with Carter sixth on 21 wins.

They day, however, belonged to Walcott whose form continued to show little sign of wane.

He opened in dominant style, uncorking a gate-to-wire effort to spur three-year-old bay filly Sweet Wilko to a 10-1/2 length crushing of the three-year-old and upwards going 6-1/2 furlongs.

His second victory was perhaps even more emphatic as he partnered with another three-year-old bay filly, Laura B, to slam the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by 12-3/4 lengths in another front-running effort.

In a 6-1/2 furlong trip, Walcott and Laura B were tracked by Cause She’s Blonde through the half but dismissed their challenger at the quarter pole to have it all their own way in the run in.

Walcott then capped off this success over the same distance when he again made all the running with four-year-old gelding Charpetti to easily beat the three-year-old and upwards by five lengths.
