Crop Over climaxes on the lawns of Ilaro Court

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has expressed gratitude to all who made this year’s Crop Over festival a success.

Stuart last night welcomed hundreds – including overseas-based Barbadians who came home for the festival, as well as several international guests – to his official residence, Ilaro Court, for his annual Crop Over reception.

“It would have been churlish and ungracious of us to allow the season to pass and not give persons visiting us from abroad – and that number is never small – an opportunity to have a last taste of our Crop Over offering,” Stuart told the large gathering.

Among those present were former United States Attorney General Eric Holder, his wife Sharon and daughter Maya, along with other family members.

Stuart also thanked “all the artistes, musicians and sponsors and service providers who helped to make the Crop Over season a resounding success”.

“Barbadians have been served a menu of very impressive events, all of which have been substantially and resoundingly patronized by Barbadians here and by visitors to this country from our Diaspora, and the tourists who treat Barbados as their second home,” he said, while stressing that “the festival could not have been the success it has been without the patronage and support of all of these patrons”.

The Prime Minister also had special words of praise for administrators at the National Cultural Foundation and within the Ministry of Culture for their management of the island’s main cultural showpiece.

No reference was made however to Monday’s shooting incident which marred the annual festival climax and resulted in the death of 20-year-old Taried Junior Rock of 3rd Avenue, Chapman Lane, St Michael, as well as injury to at least 18 other people, including a six-year-old boy.

However, Stuart described Grand Kadooment, which attracted numerous celebrities this year, including Barbadian superstar Rihanna and Formula One Champion Lewis Hamilton, as a time, “when we saw a blaze of colour, form and movement along the streets of Barbados culminating at the Spring Garden Highway.

“In all of this we can pat ourselves on the shoulders because we conducted ourselves with impressive dignity, and, with sobriety, put up the best face of Barbados,” he said.

“I want to congratulate all of you for being the model citizens and model visitors you have been and assure you that your contribution, in whatever way that contribution was made, is equally appreciated by all of us here in the Government,” Stuart added.

There was plenty to eat and drink as patrons were treated to the very best that Crop Over 2017 had to offer.
