Two ‘Philipines’ reign at Bushy Park

The eastern parish of St Philip can boast today of having not one, but two soca kings.

Early this morning, Lil Rick successfully defended his Party Monarch crown, while veteran calypsonian Red Plastic Bag rocked his way back to first position in the Sweet Soca competition, at the end of a well-attended Soca Royale at Bushy Park, St Philip.

A beaming Lil Rick collecting his winnings from Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley and Margaret Hoyte of MQI.

A large crowd cheered as Lil Rick was announced winner of the Party Monarch competition, having amassed 90 points with a crowd-pleasing performance of Energy. He also placed third in the Sweet Soca competition with 72 points singing Blessing.

Red Plastic Bag, who previously won the Sweet Soca competition back in 2011 with ‘Once Upon a Wine’, reclaimed the title tonight with his equally popular Boat Ride, scoring 90 points.

Ten time calypso monarch Red Plastic Bag is out of the calypso monarch competition this year but has dominated the Sweet Soca competition which is one of the highlights of Barbados’ annual Crop Over festival.

Both winners drove away with luxury vehicles, cash and other prizes.

Second place in the Party Monarch competition went to Ras Iley and Grynner with De Two Ah We (82 points); third was Mistah Dale with Soca Families  (70 points) and fourth was Mikey with Feting and Brass  (60 points).

In the Sweet Soca competition, Nikita was second with her song Carry Festival  (82 points) and Marzville was fourth with 48 points.

Congrats RPB . I have been your follower from when you sang *Burn Mr Harding *, you’re a master of all the zones in calpso in any field , let the people know you do not want four 4 lines with a chorus to win any Crown or bring sweet rhythm .

And congrats to Lil Rick originate from St. George like , you have been rocking the boat for years with your sweet songs and what is important the boat never sink .

To both of you keep the boat afloat and show the younger generation how to write and create sweet rhythm beyond Crop Over ….
