UPDATE-Road fatality at Westmoreland, St James

Family members have identified the body of the woman who was struck and killed earlier today at Westmoreland, St James.

She is  61-year-old Mary Downes, who lives a stone’s throw from where the accident occurred.

Downes had reportedly just disembarked a bus after visiting her doctor when she met her unexpected death.

Police are questioning two truck drivers, one of whom was said to be overtaking the other when the fatality occurred just after 11 a.m.

Family members were inconsolable after hearing news of Downes death.

Downes’ daughter Charmaine was simply overcome with grief after identifying her mother’s body.

Here, Anglican priest Coleridge Darlington offers comfort to Downes’ daughter Charmaine and her grandson Declan at the scene.

The fatality brings to 16 the number of road deaths for the year, compared to ten for all of last year.

That portion of “Westmoreland Road” should be approached as if one was driving through a village….because indeed it is a village …dissected by a highway. I suggest a review of speed limits; and in any event, enhanced signage at both ends of the area, saying “SLOW, VILLAGE AREA”.

Agreed..in some residential/ school areas overseas, road signs are placed with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of pedestrians. For those brazen enough to break the law, there also cameras to capture their smile as they do so.
Condolences to her family and friends.

That is one of the most dangerous junctions in Barbados, made more so by the unusually large number of construction trucks passing in either direction. Condolences to the family of the deceased.

I approached it shortly after the accident and was not surprised to see what had happened, and that one of the large trucks that put the fear of God in me was involved.

That is a very very dangerous junction. Many people have died there and it is not unusual for vehicles to overtake at the same junction.

This is heart breaking, Mary had a younger brother, living in England, who died in a motor vehicle accident a few years ago. Her father, Campbell “Select” Simmonds, my first cousin, will not be able to understand what has happened again because of his health conditions. My condolences to the entire family. May Mary rest in peace.

The world is filled with some very mentally sick and ignorant peolple including bajans.

People took pictures of the lady’s dead uncovered body and keep posting them on social media to friends etc. . . for what reason ?

Someone just sent me a photo and I immediately ” trashed ” it.

    Totally sickening and disrespectful.
