UWI dominate Wanderers in T20

Opener Leniko Boucher made a stylish 66 to guide Sagicor Life UWI to victory over Counterpoint Wanderers when the first semi-final of the Barbados Cricket Association Sagicor Twenty20 Championship was played at Kensington Oval last night.

Chasing a target of 140, the UWI scored 141 for four off 19 overs. Boucher who was given a life off the fourth ball of the innings, faced 46 balls and struck nine fours. His half-century came from 34 balls and included seven fours. He shared a second-wicket partnership of 94 with captain Nicholas Kirton who made 50 not out.

They came together after opener Jervain Benjamin was bowled by leg-spinner Nikoli Charles for one in the second over of the innings with the score on 6.

Boucher and Kirton with their positive approach took the game away from Wanderers; the UWI raced to 50 in twenty minutes from 6 overs and their hundred came from 79 balls.

The UWI encountered a couple minor hiccups after Boucher, the second wicket to fall, was caught at long-off by Jason Greene off Charles in the thirteenth over with the score on 100.

They lost the wicket of Shaquille Williams caught at midwicket by Roshon Primus off left-arm spinner Chad Clarke-Reifer for 6. At that stage, the score was 114 for 3 in the sixteenth over.

Kirton continued to score freely, even though Clarke-Reifer dismissed Marlon Welcome-Goodman in the seventeenth over caught at the wicket by Sylvester Moore for 3 when the score was 127.

The UWI required 12 runs from the final two overs and skipper Kirton guided them to victory with six balls to spare.

His unbeaten fifty was compiled from 46 balls and contained two fours and one six. Charles took two wickets for 23 runs from four overs. Clarke- Reifer dismissed two batsmen for 22 runs from his 4 overs.

Earlier Counterpoint Wanderers won the toss and elected bat, they scored 139 for 9 off their twenty overs. Jonathan Drakes and Rey Matthew each made 30. Captain Diego Stuart was 18 not out.

Left-arm spinners Ryan Hinds and Kavem Hodge spun a web around the Wanderers batsmen. Hinds took four wickets for 24 runs from four overs.

Hodge bowled a containing spell of four overs, one maiden, seven runs, one wicket and young fast bowler Chemar Holder chipped in with two wickets for 25 runs.
