Dog owner charged with manslaughter

A 48-year-old dog owner has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of 74-year-old Verona Lolita Gibson of Monroe Road, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael.

Gibson was attacked and killed by a number of dogs on Saturday, January 28, while walking along Monroe Road in Haggatt Hall.

Peter Christopher Rock, also of Monroe Road, is also charged with three counts of keeping dogs without a license and three counts of keeping dogs unleashed in a public place.

Around 5:30 a.m. on January 28, Gibson was walking along Monroe Road when she was attacked by a pack of pit bull. She was bitten multiple times about her body and succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Rock is expected to appear in the District ‘A’ Court on Monday, June 19.

I don’t see how they are going to find him guilty. A lot of people usually killed people on the road by accident. And most of the time they find NOT guilty.

Angus Benn Several men are serving time for “death caused by wreckless driving”. I speak as a former Police Officer. The evidence is there. The guy that killed another between the cut rocks off of Batts Rock is my case study.

They gone to jail for reckless driving. How do you find this guy guilty. On what grounds. Negligence . Did the dog owner open the GATE and let out of the dog. I have a dog and he is digging a whole into the ground near the bottom of the fence to go out side.

You cannot compare wreckless driving with this case .Driving a vehicle is different. You behind the steering wheelof that vehicle. The day owner didn’t send the dogs to killed any one. What will happened is that he will have to compensate the family.

It might just be better to say a pack of dogs rather than a pack of pitbulls. Based on reports from various newspapers, all of the dogs were not pitbulls, but made up of an Akita bitch who (according to previous reports, was in heat, 2 pitbulls, and other mixed breed dogs.

Please stop stirring up the fear and hate of pitbulls. All dogs have teeth and all can bite.

It’s far better to educate people on how to prevent dog bites, than just keep fanning the flames, with incorrect reporting.

When you have those type of dogs one have to be careful and responsible in the handling and care of them. It is an unfortunate situation and a life was lost . The law still have to be upheld and address accordingly . They did not kill a sheep but a human being and that should account for something . It she was a family of any one here they would be singing a different tune of their relative dying that horrific way. It is sad but you just cannot shake your head and declare that it is an accident . It is one that could have been avoided had the correct procedures been in placed.

Thank-you for acknowledging that a human life was lost. So many people nowadays treat animals better than fellow humans. What can be given to a person to compensate for the loss of their life? Other things can be replaced but life cannot be compensated. Daily there are still instances of people and school children on their way to school having to run for their lives and safety from dogs that are bread and trained specifically to be vicious and to attack among which are pitbulls and Akitas. How many have to die before this is regulated and policed?

What is on the statue books. One cannot decide to charge or not charge an individual based upon “It was an accident. That is why they took so long to charge the guy. He would find some way to get out once he wants to get out. A police man find a gun some time back in the nineties .take it into central on rest it on a table .The gun went off and shoot a police man in his head .What come out of that nothing because it’s an accident.

A man on his death bed, who previously worked for one of those big shots living near the Flower Forest, admitted that his boss’s dog mauled to death a woman has been missing since 1980, and he was ordered by his boss to bury the body. this is not justice my no means. this is what i call double loss. yes its very sad that this happened, never good to loose a love one in this manner. thing is this most of us keep pets and never take them to be registered. the present and past organizations do not advertise and encourage citizens to take such measures. when our pets get sick we take them to the vet or RSPCA, but nothing more than that. most bajans do not even walk pets we just have them just because. some folks like myself do not like pets restrained. i have 2 cats and a rottweiler and none of them are restrained, but there is a responsibility on the owners to properly secure their pets, especially the ones (like dogs) who have the ability to think and disregard a command. all the dog programs here in barbados is about money, poor man can not afford to take his dog to training cause he has no money. I wonder if the dog owner was white what would the outcome be? Should 2 families loose here?

It’s about time. He should have made sure that these dogs were secured.

I read bout a rape case that tek 15 years to call and the virtual complainant made clear she was no longer interested now this is 2017 plus 15 equals 2032 that the victim has to wait. A lot can happen to the accused also from a wrong turn with a NCD to dying in a car crash, shot in the street going about your business to being eaten by a bunch a dogs. Long story short given the present situation I doubt that woman will get justice already months have passed and we at this stage island idol at ALL levels.

Ryan doesn’t mean he wasn’t negligent because he was your friend. If I find a gun and bring it home and it discharges by accident and kills my wife should I not be charged ?

The fact remains that he should have made sure that the dogs were secure. Responsible dog owners check their premises for any means of escape by their animals.

He has to hold the charge

Derelection of duty to train and maintain those canine gladiators! No licences no kennel club registry? What next? Allow some young Barbadian children to pass that way to be eradicated? Get some commom sence those of you who desire and has got the extra cash to feed such breed of dogs. Quite OK to have such a breed of dog but any signs of attack charecteristics the RSPC must be notified and the dog eulogised.
