The memory of late band designer Renee Sheppard-Ratcliffe will live on this Crop Over when a band paying tribute to her hits the road.

Journey of a Dragon Fly, designed by Marlon Brewster for Jump Promotions, pays homage to a woman who lived for designing and had a passion for life.

Brewster said Sheppard-Ratcliffe – who died suddenly on Kadooment Day last year – left an invaluable mark on masquerading in Barbados and the band is a tribute to her life.

“Renee loved dragon flies; therefore we decided to follow her theme. The band embodies her personality, her life, her ups and downs, her joy and everything to do with Renee is embodied in the band this year,” he said.

The band has six sections: The Birth of Renee – ‘Pisces’: A Designer; The Love of Renee – Twins: A Tale Of Night And Day, which symbolizes the love she had for her two sons; The Passion of Renee – Fire: Rise of the Phoenix which symbolizes her rise over the years in Crop OverThe Joys of Renee – The Beauty and the Beast which symbolizes her love for light and darkness; The Spirit of Renee – Mimosa: The Toast to our Queen; and The Heart of Renee – Art of Creation: An Ode to Old Man.

The band is sponsored by The Barbados Lottery.

Manager of The Barbados Lottery, Dentonia Brewster said the lottery was delighted to be a sponsor of the annual celebration of Crop Over and, by extension, Jump Promotions as they remember Sheppard-Ratcliffe.

“We join with Jump Promotions and our fellow sponsors who share our commitment to the promotion of Barbados’ culture. Our commitment in this year’s Crop Over has greater symbolism for us. We are honoured to be a sponsor of the band Journey of a Dragon Fly which pays homage to Sheppard-Ratcliffe . . . who was an acclaimed band designer, having won multiple awards,” he said.

“Renee’s invaluable contribution to Crop Over through her memorial designs cannot be overlooked. We are therefore pleased to know that her successor . . . has decided to honour her memory and especially her love
for life.”

Very well done Barbados Lottery. She was a true gem, totally committed and very hard worker who’s attention to detail was impeccable. May her memory live for many years to come. Maybe there can be a trophy for best original design or theme in her honour.
