Straker found not guilty of wounding

A man in his 20s was all smiles today after he was found not guilty of assault.

Dario Ricardo Straker, of #130 Ealing Park, Christ Church, had been accused – along with another man who is now deceased – of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Kemar O’Neal Blackman on October 19, 2011.

Magistrate Douglas Frederick found Straker not guilty of the offence in the No. 1 District ‘A’ Criminal Court.

Fredrick said that based on the evidence before the court, it would have been difficult for Blackman to know exactly who had assaulted him at the time as he was struck from the back.

It was for that reason that the magistrate told Straker, “you are free to go.”

In another matter, 22-year-old Stephen David Gaskin, of Dodds Land, Church Valley, St Philip, avoided HMP Dodds after he was able to pay $500 forthwith to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today.

He had pleaded guilty to assaulting Shakayla Goodridge on March 14, occasioning her actual bodily harm.

In addition to imposing the fine, Magistrate Frederick placed Gaskin on a bond to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for the next six months.

If he breaches the order, he will spend a month in jail.

No conviction was recorded against Gaskin.

Meanwhile, an unemployed man, who is listed as having no fixed place of abode, was transferred from the Psychiatric Hospital to HMP Dodds.

Justin Dave Clarke pleaded guilty last month to entering Rezults Auto sometime between February 8 and 9 as a trespasser and stealing shock absorbers worth $300.

He was sent to the Black Rock, St Michael institution for a three-week assessment after the magistrate realized that the 29-year-old was “not tracking” and was slow to answer questions.

Clarke was assessed and today he again admitted to the crime.

He was sentenced to five months in prison.
