No 2017 Grammy wins for RiRi

Barbadian Rihanna went home empty-handed tonight, as British singer Adele and a very pregnant Beyonce stole the spotlight at the 59th annual Grammy Awards show.

Rihanna, who already has eight Grammys to her name, was nominated in eight categories this year. However, the night clearly belonged to Adele, who copped the coveted album of the year with ’25’.

Adele walked away with the night’s top awards.

The British singer was an underdog in the category which most critics believed would go to Beyoncé for her concept album, Lemonade.

Beyonce’, who is expecting twins, was one of the night’s stand outs.

However, the award topped off an eventful night for Adele who had to stop her tribute to George Michael after technical difficulties. She also picked up song of the year, best pop solo performance, and record of the year for Hello, while for ’25’ she also won best pop vocal album.

In her speech Adele took time to pay tribute to Beyoncé, who missed out on the best album award again. “The way you make my black friends feel is empowering,” she said in a speech where she also paid tribute to her management team for encouraging her to come back and record 25.

Rihanna arriving at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles for Sunday night’s show.

Adele also beat off competition from Drake, Justin Bieber and country star Sturgill Simpson for the honour. The album featured hit singles including Hello, the video for which sparked controversy after its director Xavier Dolan said the casting of The Wire star Tristan Wilds was a deliberate attempt to address police brutality.

The award sees the British singer add to her list of gongs for the record, which was released in 2015 and continued to have huge sales last year making it the best selling album of 2016.

No 2017 Grammy win for Rihanna, a blessing in disguise. Adele’s ‘Hello’ and that’s it. Ridiculously, Over Rated! And she proved it when she had to Restart live on stage. The TV presenters this morning got more faces than Big Ben, excuse after excuse. Anyone else, they would of tear them apart. The GONG Parade is becoming a shambles.

This woman breaking all kinds of records. The stats speak for themselves. Work was one of the biggest tunes on the planet along with Love on the Brain and she did not win any? But like Dre said in this post “She’s making bank tho” she’s stacking up that paper and making history. The USA is only one part of the world. The rest of the world knows better.

Come on guys Rihanna is blessed…no one can take her talent from her and her music touches millions . A GRAMMY doesnt prove that….the world appreciates her art, but Adeles album is also very good. I heard her live. They all get their spot where they are shining and they are all winners

I’m not disputing that Lisa Iniesta. I’m saying riri isn’t the only one with brilliant work. Everyone deserves a chance to win. If the same artists win every year, what is the point of the awards?

The point of the award is to reward the BEST WORK, if an artist repeatedly have the best work they should repeatedly get the award. Nicole Clarke it isn’t so everyone can get a chance at it, its that everyone with the best work gets a chance. Anti was way too brilliant to walk away with nothing

It’s quite fair to say that when high stakes are involved in choosing a fantastic song they are many things to be considered. The song must be appealing to a broad spectrum of listeners and not just limited to a specified age groups. Style of and genre of music is also instrumental in lots of cases. Uniqueness of voice and the songs intro and chorus. Some modern music are just straight froward cadence, thus lacking all other composition parts of the scientific music structure. Rhi Rhi has been quite occupied in a bit of filming so I think a bit off show bis prejudice has been involved!

I understand that people are upset about Rihanna and Trump but has the government ever had their hand in who really gets picked to win or people are just using that as an excuse because no one likes the guy and they are using that as the excuse because she didn’t win. I don’t think the Grammy will judge her because of her saying stating her opinion about him even tho it wasn’t the smartest move to make but could it be that maybe her album just wasn’t the best even tho fans will never see it like that?

Why do we in Barbados avoid discussing race and these showbiz awards?
Why is it that over the last few years so few black artistes have won any of the main awards and the ones who have been older singers.
Not surprisingly, while the matter of the culture clash is being discussed in the US, Canada and the UK, in Barbados we prefer to bury or heads in the sand and talk about fashion and Rihanna.
