Five firearms discovered in food barrel

A 29-year-old woman is due to appear in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court this morning after she was nabbed at the Bridgetown Port last Thursday on two firearm offences.

Skye Yasmin Lecreta Murray of Perry Gap, Roebuck Street,  St Michael reportedly went to the Bridgetown Port to clear a barrel labelled personal effects. During a search by Customs officers, five disassembled firearms were discovered concealed among food stuff in the barrel.

The matter was reported to the police and Murray was taken into custody and subsequently arrested and formally charged with importation and possession of firearms.

This is the perfect way to set up someone.

Unless you are the one packing a barrel at the source you are taking a big gamble collecting a barrel at the port.

I think a good lawyer can create enough doubt in the mind of a jury because if I was a juror and she wasn’t present at the source there is no way in clear conscience I could find her guilty.

It is an old trick used quite often on airlines…set her up with one job, while eyes are distracted, smuggle the others in. Customs should go back and search everything parcel that came in at the same time.
By the way, why should customs have to call in police to make arrests? Customs and immigration should have the right of arrest.
I offer that to Adriel Brathwaite and Dopey Stuart for nothing.

Kathy Ann Powell, what the shipper probably meant was packing the barrel was your responsibility not theirs. Whether you pack it yourself or got someone else to do it they wouldn’t pack it. In addition, you could pack a barrel and send it to someone but you would have to give the person the details to pick up the barrel.

Custom and immigration has their jurisdiction, just like the police has theirs, can you or Hal Austin say how it will be better to grant them the power of arrest. When the case is callled, they would spend time in court, instead of finding contraband .

I should hope that there is some kind of agreement with the country from where the barrel originated so that the person sending the barrel can be held accountable also….if she is not guilty she should be telling all the information on the person that sentire the barrel….she cannot say she does not know who it’s from because you just don’t show up at the port to clear a barrel that you were not expecting. .
.if she is guilty, show no mercy!

People really fooling themselves if they think this is the main source of firearms through the port.
Almost every barrel is search there, what should be a real cause of concerns are the twenty and forty foot containers that are driven from the port to established businesses in Barbados and are searched in ten minutes after the custom officers are seen fraternizing with the owners and managers of these businesses,

Tracing that barrel is of utmost importance! The originality of its shipment and date of invoice should be should show its location and person’s signature who shipped the containment. Here we have a case where FBI or Interpol can be helpful. In my world that is a catch of arms which can become a squad of assassins.

I have learned not to be too quick to judge and to first give people the benefit of doubt in situations like this. For I myself have fallen prey to people going in your barrels .Last year I personally shipped a barrel on receiving it I home unpacking and a large tin of chocolate covered cookies that was given to me to take for the kids .lo and behold seal broken and it was then I discovered that some lickerish body eat some from the middle and bottom layers and leave the top untouched. Anger turned to fright as that someone could have very easily put a gun or drugs in it as well.No one is safe in these situations .In today’s world we ship and put our lives in other people’s hands

Immigration and Customs and excise ,dont have the right of warrant to arrest, customs and excise only have the right to arrest if the case is individual, have an issued case number and they are doing the collection and surveillance with the police for evidence……
I wonder how many guns have gotten through , because people as like this person was lucky but the luck run out…..

Thanks, Zeus. I always wondered how people did research. The point I am making is that both customs and immigration officers should be warranted with the authority to make arrests; prison officers should also be given the right to make arrests within the precincts of the prisons and courts.
Apart from everything, it will prevent territorial battles ie customs and police at the airport. There is no reason why police alone should have the right of arrest
I only react to printed things when they are clearly backward and lack logic.
