Teen accused of rape

A teenager was today remanded to prison on a sexual assault charge.

The 18-year-old from Rockley, Christ Church is accused of having sexual intercourse with a woman on November 18 without her consent.

He was denied bail after the police prosecutor Sergeant Janice Ifill informed Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant that the accused was currently on bail from the No. 2 District ‘A’ Criminal Court and had other matters pending before Magistrate Douglas Frederick.

“Based on the serious nature of the matter before the court . . . we fear that if he is granted bail today he will re-offend or interfere with the complainant in this matter,” Sergeant Ifill said.

Arguing for his release, the teenager told the magistrate that he would like his freedom as he was hoping to get into skills training soon.

“My grandmother at home; she ill. I want to know if I could be there with her this Christmas because I wasn’t there last year,” he added.

However, Cuffy-Sargeant denied his application and remanded him to HMP Dodds until January 9, 2017.

This is our Barbados , seems as though we would have to add more to DODDS, is it that the mis management of our island is causing people to commit crime……..

He was believed to be a threat. The prosecution must of had enough evidence to convince the judge he was a direct threat to his victim, that’s why he was not granted bail.

Rape is not ‘nonsense’. This child is in trouble. Of course rape and any form of violence against women is condoned and encouraged in Barbados….smh..

Does Mr. Alleyne see rape as a matter that deserves little more than slap on the wrist? Rape is an extremely humbling and sick to the stomach for anyone that has had to live through it. I guess if the victim was related to him ,he would not be so critical of the Justice system .
In most Countries rape brings a sentence of years of imprisonment. This young man wants to continue his skills training ,he wants to spend Christmas at home with Grandma while some young lady is grieving over how she was treated . Give me a break . If I was the Judge in this matter ,I found guilty he would still have time to practice his skills ,whatsoever they may be. He’ll still be young after a ten year sentence.

I don’t care who say who out for what .Don’t s crime of you cannot do the time . Everyone is not lucky and even that runs out
