CUBA – Japan PM meets with Castros

HAVANA – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has met behind closed doors with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother Fidel Castro amid growing tensions in Asia with North Korea.

Abe did not specify what kind of role Cuba might play in the regional crisis.

The prime minister wrapped his visit to the island with a Friday news conference. Abe noted that Cuba had a great deal of influence with non-aligned countries.

President Castro met last week during the Non-Aligned Summit in Venezuela with Kim Yong-Nam, president of the North Korean parliament. Cuban state media characterised the meeting between officials of the communist nations as “fraternal”.

The visit comes amid concerns in Asia and elsewhere over a series of nuclear tests by North Korea.
