Fans call for boycott over Sammy sacking

Darren Sammy’s apparent axing as West Indies Twenty20 captain has sparked outrage among West Indies cricket fans across the Caribbean, with several taking to social media platform, Facebook, to express disgust and to call for a boycott of the upcoming third Test against India starting in St Lucia on Tuesday.

Ironically, the Test is scheduled for the Darren Sammy National Stadium − formerly the Beausejour Cricket Stadium − which was renamed in the player’s honour after he led West Indies to their capture of the Twenty20 World Cup in India four months ago.

Through various posts on Facebook in recent days, fans blasted the West Indies Cricket Board and the selectors for their treatment of Sammy, with several contending the all-rounder had been victimised.

Well known Jamaican dancehall artiste, Mr Vegas, in a highly charged video posted on his Facebook page, argued that Sammy had been axed because he “spoke his mind and spoke the truth” − in a reference to Sammy’s public criticism of the WICB following the T20 World Cup final.

Describing himself as an avid cricket fan, Mr Vegas said Sammy’s removal was “disgraceful” and blamed the board and selectors for the Windies team’s decline in recent years.

Claudius Francis, former president of the Senate here, posted an open letter to Sammy on his Facebook page, where he praised the 32-year-old all-rounder for his leadership and for representing the region with “dignity, class … and pride”.

Darren Sammy has been given “out” by the West Indies selectors.
Darren Sammy announced on Friday that he has been dropped from the Windies T20 squad.

However, while Francis was critical of the WICB and chief selector, Courtney Browne, he reserved some of his ire for regional nation grouping, CARICOM, who he said had done little to effect change in the direction of West Indies cricket.

“Still, much as I think Cameron et al are to be blamed, there can be no escaping the role − or lack thereof − of the region’s political leaders,” Francis argued.

“Almost daily we heard from them at the CARICOM level of how the WICB was destroying cricket and needed to be replaced yet they did nothing at their individual local level to ensure that change took place.”

Other fans went as far as to call for a boycott of the upcoming Test as a means of protesting the selectors’ decision and making a statement to the WICB.

“To all fans in St Lucia and Trinidad who genuinely love West Indies cricket and who are concerned about the state of its administration and the future of the game, if you feel as though you have had enough of the WICB contempt and arrogance, then stay away from the upcoming Test matches as a demonstration of your rejection of the WICB,” one fan posted.

The fourth and final Test of the series is carded for Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain from August 18-22.

On Sunday, the St Lucia News Online reported that a protest by a group of fans was being planned for the opening day of the Test match here, and that many St Lucians were seemingly willing to consider boycotting the game.

Sammy took to social media on Friday to announce that he had been sacked as captain and dropped from the West Indies T20 side, after being informed by new chairman of selectors, Courtney Browne, in a brief phone call.

He doesn’t merit selection as a player. Was a good captain but time to move on.

Ridiculous decision to drop him as captain, most Windies Cricket Fans outraged at this move. It was done at Kensington in 1992 when we thought there was injustice in West Indies Cricket and if the people of St Lucia feels the same, they have the right to stay away from the Test Match.

Yup i am from Barbados and i love Darren Sammy he is and will always he my favorite cricketer and I don’t respect how he has been treated after all he has done for the w.i. team he has won 2 tournaments as captain cause he did a reamarkable job. They took him down as test and one day captain n the others who took over can’t even get close to the way he carried the team. The board r a bunch of cock suckers. We all need to boycott its something we as West Indians must do

      • harry turnover August 8, 2016 at 8:13 am

….and yup I too am from Barbados and if you were following WI cricket you would have realized that Sammy has ALWAYS rely on the contributions of the other players .He used to bowl ONLY to protect his averages and hardly contributed with the bat
You said you don’t respect how he was TREATED ??? so therefore you expect the Board to RESPECT how they were treated ??? ….man you is something else jack !!
Sammy is who started the FIRE…the Board is only maintaining it…and you and others got a problem wid dat ???
If you disrespected or ‘ tell off ” someone….you expect to ” lay down in bed wid dem ” ? wha you only looking to get f… up.

People crazy , he has been dropped and removed as captain , there’s no reinstating him so why boycott cricket which will affect the teams morale and also make the job of the new captain a harder one . A month from now everyone will have to accept the decision and move on including Sammy so why all the fuss . I wish Caribbean people would be this vocal in their every day lives .

  6. Puppa Weekes August 7, 2016 at 8:55 pm

What !!! When last did Sammy perform with either bat or ball? Base on performance Sammy cannot make the T20 team. So you people will be wasting your time

Sammy’s did not help his cause with his non performance. You should speak loudly when coming from a position of strength. Sammy obviously made that decision to burn his bridges when he realized that his playing days were drawing to a close.

Please note carefully when Sammy was fully entrenched in the team securely, he never protested because that was against his interest . At the time he protested he was only T20 captain an all rounder who was no longer bowling, since his bowling had become ineffective

I hope for once the W.I people can come together for this.

    • harry turnover August 8, 2016 at 8:32 am

Come together for SAMMY ??? let the people in St.Lucia come the Sammy Stadium on the 5 days of the Test match..’. .a PIGGY BACK captain who up to this day DOES NOT EVEN MERIT A PLACE ON THE TEAM ?
Gayle and the Bravos were the MOST vocal about this in words and deed and I am sure that they are ALL delighted that he has been FINALLY REMOVED.
Had it not been for Carlos Brathwaite NOBODY would have remembered Sammy.
I wonder how many of you know that boycotting a test match would not put a dent ..not even a scratch in the WI coffers as the money usually comes from TV rights and sponsors these days. That is the MAIN reason Tests in the WI start in the middle of the week instead of on weekends….to cater to OVERSEAS audiences.

Sammy led the West Indies to victory in the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, but, in this year’s tournament he batted 3 innings in which he faced 13 balls whilst scoring 8 runs. He also bowled 3 overs for 1 wicket. In 66 T20 Internationals he has scored 534 runs averaging 15.70, and has taken 44 wickets at 24.27 runs each.

  17. Nathaniel Samuels August 8, 2016 at 2:09 am

Can we be really serious? Here are the facts.
Sammy led the team to two T20 championships
Sammy contributed nothing to the bowling in the last T20 tournament
Sammy contributed little to the batting in the last T20 tournament
Sammy has been selected as an all-rounder for the West Indies cricket team but has been missing in action with his performances
Question: Do we continue to select Sammy only as a captain? How long should we continue to select him only as a captain?
When is our next tournament? Will Sammy be still available or worthy of his place then? When do we start blooding a new team? All sports teams have to make changes from time to time and it is obvious that Sammy’s time had come. He says that he lost the captaincy after a very short call from Browne, chairman of selectors. When he got the call to become captain, did he take to social media to announce that he was appointed? Did everyone agree that he was the best for the captaincy? from what I can remember there was a hue and cry that it was a ‘Lucian thing’. After winning the T20 Sammy should have made an announcement to retire and he would have been doing that ‘on a high’ but our West Indian players do not ever want to retire and end up not being selected by the selectors.
Whether we say that we are living in the 21st century and workers have a right to say what they like, it cannot be so else discipline will go through the window. Everything was not honky dory when a St. Lucian was president but Sammy toed the line. I am sure his outburst would not have materialised if was the same president.
Let me say that I believe that there should have been a deep discussion with Sammy about the plans for the future and to get his input; then would have been the ideal time to tell him that that future would be without him.
People, we have to move on and the future of the team is without Sammy so let us hope that those who are selected will be up to the task and by the time the next world tournament comes around, would be capable enough to perform to a standard that would make us proud.

Tennis can afford to have a non-playing captain because it is an individual sport. Cricket cannot afford to have a non-performing captain because it is a team sport. Why do we always get so hot and sweaty trying to be radical and supportive of mediocrity? Sammy is a nice guy, he speaks well, says the right things, the proverbial chap next door, but his performances with bat and ball do not make him one of the best 11 players in any format and he does not merit being selected at this time. Instead of being stupidly hysterical and jumping on this anti-WICB bandwagon, just take a look at his record over the past 12 to 18 months. At some stage we have to move on, and if that time is now, it is now.

  19. Julian Reifer
Julian Reifer August 8, 2016 at 5:57 am

Sammy is a fake ass, who should have been dropped a long time ago, he was extra baggage. When was the last time he made 15 runs or taken 2 wickets in a T20 match For the WI? He is very Anti-WICB now,but i remember when his St. Lucian corrupted cronies were running the same WICB (and un-sucessfully at that), he was very pro-WICB. Him Gibson and Hilaire were very vindictive against Gayle and Sarwan telling the truth. They (Gayle and Sarwan) were left out in the cold. Sammy did not want Gayle coming back into the fold. Most WI fans are “fair weather” fans, they are only behind the team if they are successful. The board is right in getting rid of all those negative, rich, greedy old trouble makers. We have a whole lot of young talented players coming through, they only need support from real fans.We were losing with all those mercenary fossils so losing with the youth is alright, they need the experience and exposure. These old rich men( Sammy, Gayle, and that porno dancer Bravo to name a few) are self-centered greedy old men who has had their day.

  20. harry turnover August 8, 2016 at 7:35 am

Boycott a match for SAMMY…man wunna got to be meking REAL SPORT…let the foolish St.Lucians do that.,and I know Trinidadians ARE NOT going to boycott a test for him…NOT TRINIS !!
Sammy was lead astray by the mouthings of Gayle and DJ Bravo who were the the MOST VOCAL in saying that HE DID NOT MERIT a place on the team back then…..and the thing is SAMMY KNEW THAT.
After the first WC win and just AFTER Sammy was appointed CAPTAIN for the home series back then…Gayle cited a bad back for not being able to play and Bravo said he wanted a break from test cricket…NOTE THE TIMING….and the other Bravo simply DOES NOT WANT TO PLAY UNDER SAMMY if one is following WI cricket…ALL BECAUSE SAMMY STILL DOES NOT MERIT A PLACE ON THE TEAM.
Sammy is nothing more than a PIGGY BACK CAPTAIN riding on the success of the team over and over again. In the last WC he pushed a rookie Carlos Brathwaite into bowling first change when HE should have been the one in an effort to bowl him off the team as he was seen as a threat to him.
This is the SAME CARLOS BRATHWAITE that won the WC in the end and he ( Sammy ) prancing up and down like a donkey without a tail as though he had contributed and to make matters worse letting his mouth over ride what little common sense he has.
GOOD RIDDANCE ya PIGGY BACK CAPTAIN..had it not been for CARLOS BRATHWAITE you would not have had a stadium bearing your name….do the right thing and tell the idiots to RENAME it the Brathwaite and Sammy Stadium.

  21. BIG SKY August 8, 2016 at 7:35 am

Sammy is a good man with a good heart with a passion for cricket,Courtney Brown played for the West Indies and with such poor performances should not even be a selector.Courtney Brown have issues, I will be boycotting all of the matches.

  22. Phil August 8, 2016 at 9:01 am

Lack of professionalism by both Darren Sammy and the WICB is how I see this whole affair. It is clouded by a call for a boycott of the 3rd test in St. Lucia. Boy, do I smell insularity moving in like a storm. I think Courtney Brown did not act on his own. Given the clear cut mode of operations by the WICB, Mr. Brown acted like a pawn and did what he was directed to do. Mr. Sammy should have been summoned to a special meeting at which the Director of Operations, The Director of Human Resources, Chairman of Selectors and a representative of the Players Association are present. Here, Mr. Brown should have inform him (Sammy) of his dismissal, and their grounds for this action and honor him with a medallion crediting him for his success as Captain. As I can recall, Look at how Lara, Gayle, D J Bravo, Sarwan, Chanderpaul, Coaches Gibson and at one point Phil Simmons , before he was recalled, Sir Curtley Ambrose and I can even go as far back as Alvin Kallicharran. Diplomacy is all it takes. Remember, the height of diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way, that they look forward to taking the trip.

    • harry turnover August 8, 2016 at 9:24 am

      Well said Phil.
People who are blaming Browne did not read or even saw or don’t even know or don’t UNDERSTAND what they read that a release from the Board back then said…
Why the Board would issue something like that and then allow him to announce OFFICIAL selection issues is mind boggling.

  23. Mack Clarke
Mack Clarke August 8, 2016 at 9:35 am

Another ridiculous decision by an idiot who has no idea of harmony , leadership and cooperation between members of a team. Getting rid of Ambrose as the bowling coach and now to sack Darren Sammy as the T20 Captain not to get the captain and coaches who can get the best of the team is shear stupidity. Well done to the WICB you have done it again.

More important things to worry about in the Caribbean. Let’s move on. He was once a “company-man”, remember ???.
With WI not doing well in TEST the crowds don’t come out , the little step forward in the last match don’t mean a full house this time around.

  26. Francis August 8, 2016 at 10:42 am

Sammy should have been sacked after his outburst at the T20 presentation.
He was out of place. No manners or knowledge of protocol what’s so ever . Total disrespect for your employer. In any other business he would have been fired immediately.
WICB is a joke organization but was not the place or time for Sammy to talk his talk.

  27. Sarifa Patel August 8, 2016 at 2:03 pm

I have been watching and following wi cricket since I was 5 years old and I am now 70, that’s a long time, and believe you me this is the worse WICB I have ever come across, but then what is new, they did to Desmond Haynes, Brian Lara, Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy etc. these gentlemen are not leaders and as far as I am concerned none are qualify to carry forward WI cricket, they are only interested in being in a position on the board but they are yet to learn that good leaders get people to follow. If a parent keeps telling a child he is an idiot how do you think that child will turn out, an idiot. We have to learn to judge situation from two sides not only because you want to hold on to power. Mr.Dave Cameron is the one to be axed, he is an arrogant individual who don’t know the first thing that qualifies a man for leadership. Sad but true. I will always support WI cricket no matter if they are on the mountain top or in a valley, encouragement when someone is down will lift them up.

  28. harry turnover August 8, 2016 at 5:49 pm

Yes this Board is the worse in the history of WI cricket…..BUT Sammy is the ONLY skipper to have disrespected and embarrassed the Board ..(.good,bad or worse) for the WHOLE WORLD TO SEE and I am with the Board on this one.
Sammy should have been FIRED IMMEDIATELY after that fiasco.
