House pays tribute to former PM’s dad

The House of Assembly Tuesday paid tribute to the Frank Leroy Arthur, the late father of former Prime Minister Owen Arthur.

The elder Arthur, who resided at Benn Hill, St Peter, passed away on May 10 at the age of 89.

Leading off the tributes was Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly and Minister of Health John Boyce, who also hails from St Peter.

Boyce recalled that the deceased always ensured that his son paid attention to his academic work while at school.

He recalled that Arthur was a hard-working man who engaged in agriculture, later becoming a small businessman in the community in which he lived.

In her tribute, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley acknowledged that she did not know the late Arthur, even as she expressed sadness at his passing.

The Member of Parliament for St Michael North East also took the opportunity to advise her parliamentary colleagues to be humble.

In his response, the former Prime Minister said because of the family’s humble origin no one would have thought that such an august Chamber would have paid tribute to his father.
