Two years for potato thief

COURT TODAY BLOCKA man who earlier this week pleaded guilty to stealing potatoes from two plantations was today sentenced to two years in prison.

Grantley McDonald Dacosta Thorpe, of Valley Land, St George was given the sentence by Magistrate Christopher Birch when he reappeared in the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court.

On Wednesday, he had pleaded guilty to stealing 105 lbs of potatoes worth $262 from Carrington Estates Limited on April 11, 2016, as well as 20 rods of sweet potatoes worth $500 from Constant Plantation between March 8 and 9.

He is the second man to receive such punishment. Birch also sentenced 42-year-old Hayden Ricardo Brathwaite to 18 months in prison on Tuesday after he admitted to stealing 50 rods of sweet potatoes valued $1,000.

Although it’s a start it’s not enough to just jail the thieves. I believe the root of the problem lies with the people buying the produce. Where there is no demand, there is no need for supply.
