Layne off to jail after failing to pay $2,000 fine

COURT TODAY BLOCKJason Tyrone Layne, 33, was jailed today after failing to pay forthwith fines totalling just over $2,000 for three traffic violations.

Appearing in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court No. 2 before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant, the unemployed man pleaded guilty to having no insurance coverage, no driver’s licence and driving an unregistered vehicle when he was caught by police on Sunday night.

For not having insurance, Layne was fined $800 with an alternative of six months in jail. For not having a driver’s license, the fine was $750 with a similar alternative. For not registering the vehicle with the Licensing Authority, the fine was $500 or four months behind bars.

Police stopped Layne, of 7th Avenue, Lot #4 Bagatelle, St Thomas in the area of the Everton Weekes Roundabout close to midnight on Sunday.

Layne’s antecedents revealed that he had committed similar offences in 2004 when he was suspended from driving for six months.

This isn’t right to put someone in jail because they don’t have any money to pay a fine. That means the poor will fill the jails and the rich walks free. Just in America some states have just stopped doing that. Remember Ferguson Missouri ?

It never ceases to amaze me the way our supposedly “EDUCATED” people think.

“Appearing in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court No. 2 before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant, “THE UNEMPLOYED MAN” pleaded guilty to having no insurance coverage, no driver’s licence and driving an unregistered vehicle when he was caught by police on Sunday night.

Is there no clue in the above statement as to the inability of this Guy to Pay a $20000.00 fine forthwith ???

What was Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant thinking ??? and is there no “ALTERNATIVE” resolution as promised by the CJ, this will only end up with Dodds being overfilled with POOR,UNEMPLOYED,HOMELESS people that have no right being there.

How about work details, there are many instances of Illegal Garbage Dumps all across the Island, and now with this “ZIKA” virus, being spread by Mosquitos, would this not be a good way to have all this mess cleaned up, instead of sending people like this to sit on their Butts at Dodds, and watch TV at our expense. Yes fine him the $2000.00 but let him (and any others in the same situation) work it off cleaning up the Island at $5.00 per Hour.
