Hunger made him do it

COURT TODAY BLOCKHunger is what made a 19-year-old lad break the windows of a car on the night of November 28.

However, Andrance Ricardo Benjamin Welch stole nothing from the vehicle owned by Ronald Karp.

When Welch went before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the District ‘A’ Magistrates Court today, he admitted that he intentionally damaged the car.

Welch is from Block 3A St. Matthias Housing Area, Pleasant Hall Land, Christ Church.

The unemployed man was granted $6 000 bail and his case was adjourned until February 18 when he returns to the same court on another matter.

Sergeant Neville Reid said that Karp parked his car at the Barbados Squash Club at Marine Gardens, Christ Church and went to play tennis.

On leaving the establishment, he never checked the vehicle but drove home. He then exchanged vehicles with his wife and left home again.

Karp’s wife later used his vehicle to go out and she called him to say that she noticed windows were shattered. Karp went to her and took the vehicle to Hastings Police Station.

Investigations led to Welch and he told them that he wanted to buy something to eat.

I a little curious as to how them track that to him. Were there cameras? Or was it a case of a dog who sucks eggs…

‘Hunger made him do it’ OK! Why Bail $6,000? Don’t make things even harder for the teenager. It would be better to find a job for him to pay for the damages done to the car. Magistrate need to show some form of compassion to some young people that have no other alternative to commit minor crimes to survive, I’m referring to first time offenders in his situation ‘hungry’
