Last night, about 50 nursing students at the Barbados Community College gathered for a prayer vigil to reflect on the life of their former classmate, who died tragically last Sunday morning in a car accident that also claimed the lives of three other
young women — Shameka’s cousin Shakira Shepard, Waveney Johnson and Carey Brathwaite.

The nursing students at the Barbados Community College came out in their numbers to remember their former classmate.

The students, who gathered at the campus’ south gate on Two Mile Hill, just a stone’s throw away from the accident site, all held candles. Some broke down in tears as they sang hymns, including, ‘How Great Is Our God’, ‘Our God is an Awesome God’, ‘Ancient of Days’ and ‘Our God is Awesome’.

The procession then made its way through the campus before coming to a stop directly in front the nursing faculty where the students huddled together and reflected on Shameka’s life.

Shameka was described by friends as fun loving and having a beautiful smile.

“She was always up beat, always smiling. And she was always saying, ‘live it up’,” Tiffany Griffith said.

Another classmate, Krystal Broomes, said she would never forget Shameka’s beautiful smile.

“She was always smiling no matter what, and she loved to have fun, but she always did her work,” Broomes said.

Tiara Gittens, who said she and Shameka spoke everyday, declared: “I’ll miss her. She was really cool”.

The students were urged to lean on each other for support during this difficult time.

Such a beautiful smile extinguished too soon. My prayers are with the family. Stand strong in your faith with God because although she is absent in the flesh she is present with God. Sleep on beloved, sleep and take your rest.

what are the safety regulations on cars imported into Barbados? I know that some folks do drive fast and make mistakes and have accidents. But I do think its time to hold the car manufactures accountable for their part on making these cars safe. Here in America, I drive a Subaru Forester. This car is humble looking but it’s built like a tank.
