Poon the U20 chess champion

Yu Tien Poon, now of Harrison College, is the 2015 Under-20 chess champion of Barbados.

He did this in fine style when he recently finished with six wins from his six games to finish a commanding point and a half ahead of the second place finisher Bryan Prescod of The Lodge School.

Going into the last round Yu Tien was already assured of the title but would have wanted to finish the tournament strongly with an unblemished record. He duly did this when he comfortably defeated Joshua Burke to claim another major title this year.

Prescod finished on four and a half points to finish in clear second having recorded a victory against the ever improving Renaldo Rochester of Queen’s College.

Justin Parsons finished a credible third place with four points after a last round win against Combermere’s Emar Edwards, while Jerome Harewood of the University of the West Indies slipped into fourth spot on three and a half points with victory over Kamal Graham I in the final round also.

Yu Tien’s next big outing will be his defence of his Barbados national chess crown in the National Chess Championships which begin tomorrow at the 6 p.m. at the Bridgetown Chess Centre.
