Mixed results at squash tourney

Barbados’ men and women had contrasting fortunes as the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships continued in Grand Cayman today.

In morning team action Barbados dismantled Trinidad and Tobago 5-0 in an easy win. Nadia McCarthty defeated Faith Gillezeau 11-5, 6-11, 12-10, 13-11. Alex Jordan beat Alexandria Yearwood 11-6, 11-9, 11-5, while Karen Meakins blanked Charlotte Knaggs 14-12, 11-9, 11-2. Amanda Haywood defeated Rhea Khan 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, while Meagan Best defeated Amy Gillezeau 11-6, 11-4, 11-3.

The Trinidadian men had better luck against Barbados than their female counterparts but not without a terrific fight from the Bajans.

Trinidad and Tobago rushed into a 2-0 lead before Barbados came storming back through wins from Gavin Cumberbatch over Kale Wilson 11-8, 1-11, 6-11, 11-16, 11-2 and Shawn Simpson over Nku Patrick 11-8, 11-8, 11-8. In the deciding fifth game Trinidad’s Mandela Patrick brought home the win with an 11-9, 11-5, 11-3 victory over Bryant Cumerbatch.

Joshua Pinard had started with a 11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3 win over Barbados’ Rhett Cumberbatch while Trinidad’s Don Lee defeated Benjamin Griffith 11-9, 11-3, 11-3.

During the morning Jamaica’s women defeated the OECS’s 4-1, while Trinidad’s veterans beat Guyana 4-1.

In action during the evening Barbados’ veterans thrashed their hosts 5-0, keeping their hopes of a fifth straight veterans title alive. Andrea Goodridge beat Grand Cayman’s Janet Sairsingh 11-7, 11-4, 11-3; Mark Sealy defeated Neil Stone-Wigg 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 12-10; Mark Gilkes beat Ken Moore 11-7, 11-8, 11-1; Leon Truss won over David Sargison 12-10, 11-3, 11-3; and Lynn De Cambra-McLeod beat Marian Goodall 11-7, 11-8, 2-11, 10-12, 11-5.

The action continues tomorrow.
