TRINIDAD – Supermarket fire leaves 200 jobless

PORT OF SPAIN –– Two hundred people have been left jobless as a result on today’s fire which destroyed the Hearty Foods Supermarket in Arima. The blaze, which broke out at around 5:30 a.m. gutted a four-storey building that also housed Ashleys Bed, Bath And Beyond. A fire officer was also injured during the firefighting effort.

Supermarket owner Ishwar Maharaj said the grocery had been a staple in Arima for the past 15 years and that management would make arrangements for workers to be placed in other jobs.

He suspects that the fire resulted from an electrical problem.

Head of the Fire Service’ Northern Division Northern Division, Peter Neverson, said the fire service received a call around 5:30 a.m and units from Arima, Tunapuna, San Juan and Wrightson road responded. He said officers had a major challenge for water.

“That was in terms of WASA and boosting the system . . . . It took quite a while before we actually got the system boosted.”

Neverson said one officer was injured as he tried to put out the blaze.

“He sustained an injury to his right hand. He attempted to do some ventilation and broke a glass and some pieces fell back and he got about nine stitches on his right hand.”

Neverson said the cause of the fire would be determined “within the next 48 hours”.
