SSA issued with ultimatum

The Government-owned Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) could be hit by industrial action tomorrow unless it reinstates two workers.

Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) Roslyn Smith told Barbados TODAY this afternoon that the National Council had sanctioned the action during a two-and-a-half hour meeting at its Dalkeith Road, St Michael Headquarters.

“If they [the two workers] are not reinstated by tomorrow there will be some kind of industrial activity at that institution,” Smith warned.

She said both parties had agreed that the workers would have been reinstated since May 15.

NUPW President Akanni McDowall also said management of the SSA  would be informed that the Council had approved the industrial action.

“If they [management] refuse to do the right thing, then we would have to take action, similar to what we are doing in the BIDC case,” he said.
