Myrie running for politics

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Shanique Myrie, the Jamaican woman who beat Barbados in a free movement court case, is seeking to enter political representation in the Corporate Area.

The 27-year-old told The Gleaner that, on Wednesday, she submitted an application to represent the People’s National Party (PNP) in the Olympic Gardens Division in St Andrew, in the upcoming local government polls.

“I’ve always loved politics. I’m always up and down campaigning. Politics was always something I’ve wanted to do and I’m going for it”, Myrie told The Gleaner.

According to her, she wants to make a ‘change’ in the lives of residents, who have been “neglected” by their political representatives.

“It’s a Labourite seat and in my community, the people hardly get anything. Many kids and older people need help. I want to make a change,” she added.

The Jamaica Labour Party’s Christopher Townsend currently represents the Olympic Garden’s Division in the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation.

Myrie also believes that her popularity as a result of her case against Barbados will help her to connect with the people she hopes to represent.

“People always see me as a strong female. A lot of people in my community admire and respect me. When they heard I wanted to run, they said they know I will make a change,” Myrie noted.

In the meantime, PNP general secretary, Paul Burke, said that a candidate has already been confirmed for the Olympic Gardens Division.

Myrie was denied entry into Barbados in 2011, and in October 2013, the Caribbean Court of Justice, awarded her damages in the sum of J$4 million.

She alleged that when she travelled to Barbados on March 14, 2011, she was discriminated against because of her nationality, subjected to a body cavity search, detained overnight in a cell, and deported to Jamaica the following day.

The case angered Jamaicans and forced CARICOM countries to review their policies for nationals entering their borders. (Jamaica Gleaner)

Not necessarily academic, but what can she possibly bring to the table? What would convince me that she deserves my vote? You don’t have to have a Master’s Degree to be a good candidate…

What does our current Prime Minister bring? And do we not live happily under him everyday? Is the goal post different by gender?

Ras Bob the coconut vendor might be a better candidate that Stuart for all I know. My issue is that she may be trying to ride on the high of her victory without actually doing anything.

The one thing she has is she stands up for herself regardless of public opinion. She’s strong in her defense of her ideals and she does her homework

This is the reason why the region is in the state it is now. She has been chosen strictly because she has name recognition in Jamaica.

Why people are so nasty against her, she is involving with her island’s people in Jamaica, nothing wrong with that, she may turn out to be a top politician, is it because she is not a lawyer, we need people like her in Barbados , to change the political landscape, there isn’t much bajans can be proud about the politicians, who seems to be always asleep.

    @jrsmith – Hail

I honestly think she may have a great deal to offer from the points you have made, but we also must bare in mind the nature of politics in the region, “why let a good opportunity go to waste”, she could garner a considerable number of votes as we now have a working class hero who took on a government and won. Good for her….

Woman came here to dance in some bar in Baxters road and told a whole heap of lies, should have been rightly deported, the amazing thing to me is the man who sent for her never took the witness stand from investigations as soon as he heard she was detained he panicked and fled the scene, she could not answer the questions put to her truthfully and was caught lying and at the end of the day ended up with monies she certainly did not deserve and we have persons here who still support this fraud, and hwen Garner was in the race for presidency of the WICB,and the Jamaicans stated that they were supporting him all hell broke loose in that said country and there was a complete abandonment of Garner and we all know the outcome that clown Cameron back in charge, anyway we always tend not to support our own, what really can Shanique Myrie bring to politics? I believe she is trying to ride on her so called popularity, but you know what? Do not be surprised if she is elected,it’s the way of the world now,any and everything is accepted.

@ Villager, hail, you have touch on a point , I always try to bring into focus , which seems to be overlook , by our bajans, This was her first visit to Barbados , like most Jamaicans ,who are caught importing drugs, but what ever Marie was visiting for and who suppose to be meeting her, seems not to be of interest to our immigration or police in bim as like the mules bringing in the drugs. if I am wrong ,please someone correct me.
She, after her arrest , had never committed a crime other than an immigration issue. the problem, is on the ground in Barbados.
    weeding out the criminals.
For me this is so far fetch, weeding out the criminals. yeah, right.
