Triple CARIFTA gold

Mary Fraser, Mario Burke and Hayley Matthews won Barbados three gold medals on the first full day of the 2015 CARIFTA Track and Field Championships at the Silver Jubilee Stadium in Basseterre, St Kitts Saturday.

Fraser secured the first one. Crossing the finish line in the Under-18 Girls 1500 metres in a personal best of 4:41.44, she left Jamaicans Britnie Dickson and Jeima Davis in the dust. Dickson won silver with a time of 4:44.39 while Davis’ 4:50.64 earned her the bronze.

Later in the day, Burke, who was the fastest qualifier in the Under-20 Boys 100 metres continued his dominance and took home the gold in 10.21 seconds – a personal best.

The third gold came from Matthews in the Girls Under-18 Javelin with a 47.37 metre throw.

Barbados also added silver and bronze to its medal tally.

In the Under-18 Boys’ 1500 metres, Jonathan Jones finished second in 4:04.03 in a race won by Jamaica’s Shemar Salmon in 4:02.98.

Another silver and a bronze were secured when Raheem Skinner and Joshua Hunte crossed the finish line in the Under-20 Boys’ 1500 metres second and third respectively, in personal bests of 3:58.19 and 3:59.39. Shevno Parks of Jamaica won in 3:56.69.

Also running away with some silverware was Tristan Evelyn who clocked 11.54 seconds in the Under-18 Girls’ 100 metres to come in behind winner Shellece Clarke of Jamaica who won in 11.50 seconds.

Although not medalling, Jaquone Hoyte, Dequan Lovell, Daryl Sobers, Deshon Trent and Elizabeth Williams made it to the finals of their events.

Hoyte finished fourth in the Under-18 Boys 100 metres in 10.60 seconds, while Williams ended her Under-20 Girls 1500 metres similarly, crossing the finish in 4:44.02.

Lovell finished fifth in the Under-20 Boys’ Discus with a throw of 48.53 metres while Sobers was right behind him after throwing 46.13 metres.

Trent finished seventh in the Under-18 Boys 400 metre Dash in 49.21 seconds.

    Good job you guys keep it up,remember without God you can do nothing,so despite the little set back, keep going we are bajans we slept on hard ottamans,grass beds,the floor on croucus bags we made it to posturepedic,divans you name it we are still here,hold our flag high.
