Jamaica – Trelawny man hacks brother to death over bicycle

KINGSTON –– Lincoln Barrett, a 44-year-old labourer, was yesterday hacked to death by his brother in a dispute over a bicycle in Duanvale, Trelawny.

Reports are that the brothers, who lived in the same home, were involved in an argument over the bicycle just outside the deceased’s door.

The accused wanted the use of the bicycle to go to perform a plumbing job while the deceased wanted to use it for transport to a gambling spot.

A machete was brought into play and Lincoln was chopped multiple times. He died on the spot.

The accused left the scene and hid for a while in the woods behind their home. He subsequently called an older brother to assist in his surrender to the police.

Older brother Kingsley Barrett said the family was loving, always helping each other during their farming days.

“What I am worrying about is that people are going to label us as a wicked family, and we are
not,” he said.

Bishop Toy Warren of the New Testament Church said: “Men’s hearts are desperately wicked and only God can change this.”

He added that the murder was prophesied at a church crusade he had, and that he wanted people to come back to God.

Inspector Lorna Henderson, head of the Trelawny Community Safety And Security Branch, in speaking to persons who had gathered, said incidents such as Barrett’s killing should not happen.

Henderson urged persons to be their brother’s keeper and to assist in resolving conflicts. She said a team of counsellors would be visiting with the family.
