Shades of ‘that’s all?’

The wait is finally over. The most talked about movie for months –– Fifty Shades Of Grey –– is finally here, ready for your viewing pleasure. Well, if you’re an adult,     that is!

This movie, based on the bestseller by E.L.R. James of over 100 billion copies worldwide, was the topic of many a discussion for the last few months, many wondering how this kinky, highly sexual, thought-provoking book would be played out on screen. If you read this raunchy book or not, the excitement and buzz leading up to the movie would have been enough to get you interested in watching it.

Last night, LIME hosted a cocktail party for 50 lucky ladies in Olympus Theatre’s VIP lounge, offering them the enviable opportunity of being the first batch to see the movie on the island.

It was like the ultimate girls’ night out, inclusive of cocktails, wine and finger foods.

From the first sight of Christian Grey played by Jamie Dornan, there were many screams of “Oh my!” and “Christian!” echoing throughout the theatre. After about ten minutes, the ladies settled down, memories on the content of the book and what Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, was described to look like, foremost in mind.

But it was quickly evident that it’s one thing to read about that Red Room and what went on in it (for those of you who read the book, you would know), but it’s quite another thing to actually depict it on screen. So quite understandably, many scenes were left with the question “That’s all?”

Fifty shades of dissatisfaction? Certainly, many moments of “I wish the cameraman would tilt the camera just a little bit more”.

But to be fair to the movie, there is only so much you can pack into 125 minutes of film time, and only so much you can show on television without being on the border of the unacceptable –– and pornography. With that said, however, there have been many other movies and even commercials that were way more scintillating than what was presented in most scenes of Fifty Shades Of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Hopefully there will be a Part Two and Three. In fact, I’m 98 per cent sure there will be.

As for the raunchy scenes we would have read in the book, I will agree with most that the film ones could have been much raunchier –– for those of us with the wilder imagination.

Make no mistake, there were a few on-screen scenes that sparked butterflies and made one gasp for breath, especially those displaying the sharply dressed and commanding Grey.

But the collective sigh and sounds of “that’s it?”, when the movie was ended, showed clearly that every female was expecting more; much more!

But, with all that said, it’s still a must-see. So have your significant other and you take in this movie dubbed the number one of the world. Have your own perception of it. Maybe, it will be different from those of us who have already made our judgments.

If there is no significant other, then make it a girls’ night out. It will surely provide you with entertainment, and spark some heated conversations for weeks to come.

Waste of time and money . It just the hype they cleverly surrounded it in that makes everyone want to watch it. It’s just good advertising.
