Thrilling victory for Springer

Springer Memorial pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind 30-29 overtime victory over Combermere when the National Sports Council WIBISCO 2014 Senior Girls Basketball Tournament continued today.

Despite trailing for the majority of the contest, Springer  — the visitors — were able to overcome a six point deficit heading into the final quarter, before getting the job done in overtime.

Combermere, who led at the end of the first three quarters, 8-4, 14-12 and 21-15, just could not deliver the knockout punch to the former basketball queens.

With the scores locked at 25 at the end of regulation time, Springer held their nerve behind the vociferous support of their home fans to claim victory by the smallest of margins.

For the winners, Zakiya Kirton top scored with 13, Tricia Phillips added six and Shakeillia Smith and Kylia Smith contributed four points each.

Tatyanna Waldrond was Combermere’s leading scorer with eight points, while Shanika Grannum seven, Sheniqua Thomas six and Jamie Lashley and Damara Dawson added four each.

The win was Springer’s second in succession following their 50-8 trouncing of the St Michael School earlier in the week.
