Defending champs open with big win

Defending champions Wilkie Cumberbatch got off to an excellent start in this year’s BICO-sponsored National Sports Council’s Primary Schools Football Tournament with a 3-0 win over St Ambrose Primary at the Blenheim, St Michael playing field today.

Those scoring for Wilkie Cumberbatch were Tajio James, Hashim Brewster and Hashim Baker.

Charles F. Broome won 1-0 by virtue of a penalty over St Giles Primary with Ajai Small scoring for the spot.

Belmont Primary brought about their own demise when Jaheim Burgess scored an own goal against St Paul’s Primary. That turned out to be the only goal in the match. George Lamming were also victorious over Luther Thorne with a 1-0 result thanks to Shawneko Moore.

Meanwhile St Cyprian’s Primary and People’s Cathedral which are two of the private schools in the competition took on each other with St Cyprian’s green and white seeming to be camped out in the People’s Cathedral half as they thrashed their opponents 4-1. St Cyprian’s striker Joshua Johnson scored a hat-trick while Roger Jones scored the other. Sylvian Wade scored the lone goal for People’s Cathedral.

St Mary’s Primary had every reason to be ecstatic when they dominated Lawrence T. Gay Memorial to emerge with a 3-0 result. Deacon’s Primary was also in the winning circle defeating Eden Lodge 2-0. St Phillip Primary also recorded a 2-0 win over St Mark’s Primary.

In other matches played around the island, Reynolds Weekes Primary defeated St Martin’s Mangrove 1-0 with Joshua McConney scoring for his team.

A DaCosta Edwards and St Bernard’s Primary played to a 1-1 draw.
