Govt gets $4m loan for flooding

Barbados has secured a US$4.615 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank to finance a project to reduce flood hazard risks in Speightstown, St Peter.

The announcement came yesterday from the CDB which noted that “under this project, the capacity of the main storm drain in Speightstown will be increased from a 1-in-5 year rainfall flow event to a 1-in-20 year storm flow event”.

The project is also expected to provide for technical assistance to “improve the planning, execution, and funding of routine maintenance in Speightstown, and to develop and implement a community education programme on flood reduction measures in the town”, the statement said.
