South Africa’s first black president and anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela has died, South Africa’s president says.

Mr Mandela, 95, led South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s, after 27 years in prison.

He had been receiving intense home-based medical care for a lung infection after three months in hospital.

In a statement on South African national TV, Mr Zuma said Mr Mandela had “departed” and was at peace.

RIP Nelson Mandela. We will never ever have another leader like you in this lifetime. You gave and shared unselfishly, and you left a legacy that will live on for many generations. Let’s hope you left an example that other world leaders will follow. Sleep well love!

I have more respect and regard for this sainted man, than the last dozen Popes; or Presidents; or Prime Ministers. Superlatives fail to describe, the extent of his humanity. May all civilized men and women, world-wide, reflect on his life and legacy , and affirm to live their own lives, just a little bit better.
The whole world owes him a debt we can never repay. But we surely can try.

The loss of Nelson Mandela, is a loss for the entire world. But his life is one that should be used to teach us about humility, forgiveness and genuine love for all people.
